Levirate Marriage
Levirate marriage was am Israelite custom in which a man married the widow of his deceased brother if the brother had died without a son. The first son born from that marriage was counted as the dead brother's heir, so that his family line and inheritance would continue (Deuteronomy 25:5–10).
