A ruby is a valuable red gemstone often used in jewelry. However, ancient names for precious stones were not always exact. The word ruby may sometimes refer to another red stone.

Some Bible translations use “ruby” for the Hebrew word peninim. The exact meaning of this word is uncertain (Job 28:18; Proverbs 3:15; 8:11; 20:15; 31:10; Lamentations 4:7). It may refer to a deep red stone, coral, or another valuable material.
