Teman (Place)

In the prophetic books, Teman seems to have been an important city in Edom. The name is sometimes used in poetry to represent the whole land of Edom (Jeremiah 49:7, 20; Amos 1:12; Obadiah 1:9).

Since Teman means “south,” it is likey that the city may have been in the southern part of Edom. However, its exact location is unknown.

The people of Teman were known for their wisdom (Jeremiah 49:7; Obadiah 1:8–9). This reputation may be connected with Eliphaz the Temanite, one of Job’s counselors (Job 2:11, 4:1; 15:1; 22:1; 42:7–9).
