Timnath-heres, Timnath-serah

Timnath-serah was the city that Joshua son of Nun received as his share when the land was divided among the tribes of Israel (Joshua 19:49–50). Joshua rebuilt the city and settled there.

When Joshua died, the Israelites buried him on his own land in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash (Joshua 24:30). Judges 2:9 gives the same location, but uses the name Timnath-heres. This name means “territory [or portion] of the sun.” This may mean that the city had once been a place where people worshiped the sun.
