1. a moving crowd or multitude of persons, a throng: Matthew 9:23, Mark 2:4, Luke 5:1, John 5:13, al.; pl., Matthew 5:1, Mark 10:1, Luke 3:7, and freq.; ὄ. ἱκανός, Mark 10:46, al.; τοσοῦτος, Matthew 15:33; οὐ μετ᾽ ὄχλου, Acts 24:18; ἄτερ ὄχλου, Luke 22:6; πᾶς ὁ ὄ., Matthew 13:2, Mark 2:13, al.; ὄ. πολύς, Matthew 20:29, Mark 5:21, al.; ὁ πολὺς ὄ. (ὄ. π.), the populace, the common people, Mark 12:37 (Swete, in l.; Field, Notes, 37), John 12:9 (Westc, in l.).
2. (As also cl., opposite to δῆμος, which see, and cf. Tr., Syn., §xcviii), the populace, the common people (cf. ὁ πολὺς ὄ., supr.), Matthew 14:5; 21:26, Mark 12:12, John 7:12b; so with contempt (cl.), John 7:49. In a more general sense, a multitude: with genitive, ὀνομάτων (see: ὀ.), Acts 1:15; μαθητῶν, Luke 6:17, al.
