Definition

ὑπέρ (when following subst.—poët.—ὕπερ; so as adv., 2 Corinthians 11:23),

prep. with genitive, accusative

I. C. genitive, primarily of place (rest or motion), over, above, across, beyond, hence, metaphorically,

1. for, on behalf of: of prayer, Matthew 5:44, Acts 8:24, Romans 10:1, James 5:16, al.; of laying down life, John 10:11, Romans 9:3, al.; esp. of Christ giving his life for man's redemption, Mark 14:24, John 10:15, Acts 21:13, Romans 5:6-8, al.; opposite to κατά, Mark 9:40, Luke 9:50, Romans 8:31.

2. Causal, for, because of, for the sake of: with genitive of person(s), Acts 5:41, Romans 1:5, Philippians 1:29, 2 Corinthians 12:10, al.; with genitive of thing(s), John 11:4, Romans 15:8, 2 Corinthians 1:6, al.
