Although Israel was God’s rich and fruitful vine (see Isaiah 5:1–7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 17:6), she wrongly credited her success to the Canaanite fertility gods instead of the Lord. She used the wealth God gave her to enhance idol worship.
sacred pillars: Stone pillars could serve as acceptable memorials (Genesis 35:20; Joshua 24:26–27), but God forbade the Israelites from using them in worship like the Canaanites did (Exodus 23:24; Deuteronomy 16:22).
