Study note

Mark 8:33

  • Jesus looked at his disciples before he corrected Peter in public. He wanted them to understand Peter's mistake.

  • Get behind Me, Satan!: Jesus does not mean that a demon possessed Peter. Peter spoke from a human perspective, not God's. So without knowing it, he spoke for Satan, "the god of this age" (2 Corinthians 4:4). He repeated Satan's temptation (compare Matthew 4:8–10).
