The leading priests and teachers of the law began planning to kill Jesus because they feared him. His strong influence on the people, the amazement caused by his actions, and the power of his teaching threatened their authority (see 3:6; 12:12; 14:1–2, 10–11). Their response showed that reform alone would not be enough. God’s judgment was necessary.
