The word "Messiah" means "Anointed One." It comes from the Hebrew word mashiakh and is translated into Greek as Christos. The Messiah refers to the promised savior who would come from King David's family line (see study note on 1:32–33). As the apostles started preaching the good news about Jesus to the non-Jewish world, Christians started using Christos more as a name than a title.
