I fast twice a week and pay tithes of all that I acquire: Fasting (not eating food) and tithing (giving a tenth of one's income) were signs of religious devotion in Judaism. The law required fasting only once a year (Leviticus 16:29–31). But many devout Jews in the time of Jesus fasted twice a week (see also Luke 5:33; 11:41–42).
