Study note

John 12:27

My soul is troubled: John used the same term (Greek tarassō) to describe the strong emotion of agony that Jesus felt when he stood before Lazarus’s tomb (11:33; also 13:21).

When Jesus faced his coming death, he was not without emotion. He did not act as if nothing troubled him. He experienced real anguish (deep sorrow and distress). Even in his distress, Jesus remained obedient to the Father’s will. Throughout his ministry, he had said that he did only what the Father sent him to do (5:19–23; 6:37; 8:29, 38; 14:31).
