Study note

2 Samuel 8:10

  • his son: King Toi sent his own son instead of another group of messengers because he believed this mission was very important. By sending the crown prince, Toi showed that he wanted to keep a strong and respectful relationship with David.

  • Joram: The name Joram includes the prefix Jo-, which is a shortened form of the name Yahweh. The name means “Yahweh is exalted.” In 1 Chronicles 18:10, the prince’s name is Hadoram, which means “Hadad [a Canaanite god] is exalted.” It is possible that Toi used the name Joram for this visit to make his son’s name more acceptable to David for political reasons.
