Study note

1 Kings 4:3

  • The court secretaries were state officials and Solomon’s private secretaries. Shisha, the father of Elihoreph and Ahijah, had served David in this role (2 Samuel 8:17; 20:25; 1 Chronicles 18:16).

  • The royal historian acted as the chief of protocol for palace events and ceremonies. In ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, these officials often represented the king in important talks (see 2 Kings 18:18; 2 Chronicles 34:8).
