Study note

Isaiah 2:7–8

Isaiah listed the things people used as substitutes for the true God. These included material wealth and security, such as silver and treasures. They also included military strength, such as warhorses and chariots. People also trusted in idols, which were objects they loved and valued.

This kind of wealth and military power marked the reign of King Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26:6–21). However, Isaiah showed that trusting these things was wrong.

In other places, Isaiah explained how foolish it is to worship something made by human hands (see Isaiah 44:9–20; 45:16).
