Many people might have thought Jeremiah acted foolishly when he agreed to buy the land. After Jerusalem fell and many people went into exile, the land's value would drop to almost nothing. Still, Jeremiah immediately bought the field.
Matthew 27:9–10 refers to the “what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet,” which might allude to this event.
