And YHWH, God of Israel, chose me above all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever. For among Judah he chose for a leader, and in the house of Judah, the house of my father, and among the sons of my father, He was pleased with me to make me king over all Israel.

Notes

the LORD...chose me...to be king over Israel forever: God's selection of David started with Judah (Genesis 49:8–12), reached its peak with David (1 Samuel 16:1–13), and continued with Solomon (1 Chronicles 28:5–6, 10). All later kings ruled because of God's promise to David.

David's first speech includes a message to his people (1 Chronicles 28:2–8) and a message to Solomon (28:9–10). The main focus is David's wish for Solomon to build a temple. David also discusses two other important themes: God's choice of Solomon and the people's duty to follow God's commandments.

The story of Solomon's coronation continues from 1 Chronicles 23:1–2. David, at the height of his power, transfers authority to Solomon (compare 1 Kings 1:1–2:9).
