The People of Jerusalem

¹So all Israel was recorded in the genealogies written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. But Judah was exiled to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.

¹And all Israel was reckoned, and behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. And Judah was removed to Babylon for their trespass.

²Now the first to resettle their own property in their cities were Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants.^a

²And the first dwellers who were in their possessions in their cities of Israel were the priests, the Levites, and the Nethinim.

³Some of the descendants of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem:

³And in Jerusalem dwelt some of the sons of Judah, and some of the sons of Benjamin, and some of the sons of Ephraim and Manasseh:

⁴Uthai son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, a descendant of Perez son of Judah.

⁵From the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn and his sons.

⁶And of the sons of Zerah: Jeuel and their brothers, six hundred and ninety.

⁷From the Benjamites: Sallu son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah;

⁷And of the sons of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Senuah;

⁸Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, the son of Michri; Meshullam son of Shephatiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah;

⁸and Ibneiah son of Jeroham; and Elah son of Uzzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah;

⁹and 956 of their relatives according to their genealogy. All these men were heads of their families.

⁹and their brothers according to their generations—nine hundred and fifty-six. All these men were heads of fathers according to the house of their fathers.

¹⁰From the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, and Jachin;

¹⁰And of the priests: Jedaiah, and Jehoiarib, and Jachin;

¹¹Azariah son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the chief official of God’s temple;

¹¹and Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, leader in the house of God;

¹²Adaiah son of Jeroham, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah; Maasai son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith,^a the son of Immer;

¹²and Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah; and Maasai son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer;

¹³and 1,760 of their relatives, the heads of their families, able men for the work of the service of the house of God.

¹³and their brothers, heads of the house of their fathers, a thousand and seven hundred and sixty mighty of valor for the work of the service of the house of God.

¹⁴From the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, a descendant of Merari;

¹⁴And of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari;

¹⁵Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph;

¹⁵and Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal, and Mattaniah son of Micha, son of Zichri, son of Asaph;

¹⁶Obadiah son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun; and Berechiah son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.

¹⁶and Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun; and Berechiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who dwelt in the villages of the Netophathite.

¹⁷These were the gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their relatives. Shallum was their chief;

¹⁷And the gatekeepers: Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brothers. Shallum was the chief;

¹⁸he was previously stationed at the King’s Gate on the east side. These were the gatekeepers from the camp of the Levites.

¹⁸and until then at the Gate of the King on the east they had been the gatekeepers for the camps of the sons of Levi.

¹⁹Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph,^a the son of Korah, and his relatives from the Korahites were assigned to guard the thresholds of the Tent, just as their fathers had been assigned to guard the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD.

¹⁹And Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his brothers from the house of his father, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, keepers of the thresholds of the tabernacle—and their fathers were over the camp of YHWH, keepers of the entrance.

²⁰In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar had been in charge of the gatekeepers, and the LORD was with him.

²⁰And Phinehas son of Eleazar had been the officer over them formerly; YHWH was with him.

²¹Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

²¹Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was keeper of the door of the Tent of Meeting.

²²The number of those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds was 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to their positions of trust.

²²All those chosen for gatekeepers at the thresholds were two hundred and twelve. They in their villages were reckoned—David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to their trusted office.

²³So they and their descendants were assigned to guard the gates of the house of the LORD—the house called the Tent.

²³And they and their children were over the gates of the house of YHWH, even of the house of the tabernacle, by watches.

²⁴The gatekeepers were stationed on the four sides: east, west, north, and south.

²⁴On the four sides were the gatekeepers: The east, west, north, and south.

²⁵Their relatives came from their villages at fixed times to serve with them for seven-day periods.

²⁵And their brothers in their villages were to come in for seven days from time to time with these.

²⁶But the four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the rooms and the treasuries of the house of God.

²⁶For in office were four chief gatekeepers; they were Levites, and they were over the chambers and over the treasuries of the house of God.

²⁷They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they were responsible for guarding it and opening it every morning.

²⁷And around the house of God they lodged, because on them was the watch. And they were over the opening morning by morning.

²⁸Some of them were in charge of the articles used in worship, to count them whenever they were brought in or taken out.

²⁸And some of them were in charge of the vessels of service, for by number they brought them in and by number they took them out.

²⁹Others were put in charge of the furnishings and other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the fine flour, wine, oil, frankincense, and spices.

²⁹And some of them were appointed over the vessels and over all the vessels of the sanctuary, and over the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.

³⁰And some of the sons of the priests mixed the spices.

³⁰And some of the sons of the priests were mixing the ointment of the spices.

³¹A Levite named Mattithiah, the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the bread.

³¹And Mattithiah of the Levites (he was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite) was entrusted over the work of the flat cakes.

³²Some of their Kohathite relatives were responsible for preparing the rows of the showbread every Sabbath.

³²And some of the sons of the Kohathites from their brothers were over the bread of the arrangement, to prepare it Sabbath by Sabbath.

³³Those who were musicians, the heads of Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers and were exempt from other duties because they were on duty day and night.

³³And these singers, the heads of fathers of the Levites in the chambers, were free, for by day and by night they were over them in the work.

³⁴All these were heads of Levite families, chiefs according to their genealogies, and they lived in Jerusalem.

³⁴These the heads of the fathers of the Levites throughout their generations were heads; these dwelt in Jerusalem.

The Descendants of Saul

³⁵Jeiel the father^a of Gibeon lived in Gibeon. His wife’s name was Maacah.

³⁵And at Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon, Jeiel, and the name of his wife was Maacah,

³⁶Abdon was his firstborn son, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,

³⁶and His firstborn son was Abdon, and Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab,

³⁷Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.

³⁷and Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth.

³⁸Mikloth was the father of Shimeam.^a They too lived alongside their relatives in Jerusalem.

³⁸And Mikloth begat Shimeam. And they also dwelt alongside their brothers in Jerusalem with their brothers.

³⁹Ner was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul, and Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal.

³⁹And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Esh-baal.

⁴⁰The son of Jonathan:

Merib-baal, who was the father of Micah.

⁴⁰And a son of Jonathan: Merib-baal, and Merib-baal begat Micah.

⁴¹The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz.^a

⁴¹And the sons of Micah: Pithon, and Melech, and Tahrea, and Ahaz.

⁴²Ahaz was the father of Jarah; Jarah^a was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri was the father of Moza.

⁴²And Ahaz begat Jarah; and Jarah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza;

⁴³Moza was the father of Binea. Rephaiah^a was his son, Elasah his son, and Azel his son.

⁴³and Moza begat Binea; and Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son.

⁴⁴And Azel had six sons, and these were their names: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.

⁴⁴And unto Azel were six sons, and these their names: Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.
