1 Peter 5

Instructions to Elders

1As a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings, and a partaker of the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you:

1I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ and a partaker of the glory being about to be revealed:

2Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed, but out of eagerness;

2Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but willingly according to God; and not for shameful gain but eagerly,

3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

3not as exercising lordship over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.

4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

4And on the Chief Shepherd having been made manifest, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Cast Your Cares on Him

5Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud,

but gives grace to the humble.”

5Likewise, younger ones, be subject to your elders. And all, gird on humility to one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you.

6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time,

7Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

7having cast all your anxiety on Him, because with Him there is care about you.

8Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

8Be sober-minded; be alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around as a roaring lion seeking whom to swallow up,

9Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.

9whom you should resist, firm in the faith, knowing the same sufferings in your brotherhood to be experienced in the world.

Benediction and Farewell

10And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you.

10And the God of all grace, the One having called you to His eternal glory in Christ, having suffered a little while, He Himself will complete, will confirm, will strengthen, and will establish you.

11To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

11To Him be the power to the ages of the ages. Amen.

12Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.

12Through Silvanus, the faithful brother as I reckon him, I wrote to you through few words, exhorting and testifying this to be the true grace of God, in which you stand.

13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does my son Mark.

13She in Babylon chosen with you greets you, and my son Mark.

14Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ.
