Notes

  • the gods who struck the Egyptians: The Philistines, who worshiped many gods, knew about the Lord’s power. However, they did not understand that he was the one true God.

  • Struck … with all kinds of plagues: The Lord later demonstrated his power against the Philistines in a similar way (see 1 Samuel 5:6–6:6).

The crisis with the ark of the covenant showed Israel needed Samuel's leadership. It also fulfilled prophecies about Eli and his sons (1 Samuel 3:11–14).
