2 Chronicles 18

Jehoshaphat Allies with Ahab

1Now Jehoshaphat had an abundance of riches and honor, and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage.

1And unto Jehoshaphat were riches and honor in abundance, and he became son-in-law to Ahab.

2And some years later he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria, where Ahab sacrificed many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him and urged him to march up to Ramoth-gilead.

2And he went down after some years to Ahab in Samaria, and Ahab killed for him sheep and oxen in abundance, and for the people who were with him, and he incited him to go up to Ramoth-gilead.

3Ahab king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me against Ramoth-gilead?”

And Jehoshaphat replied, “I am as you are, and my people are your people; we will join you in the war.”

3And Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me against Ramoth-gilead?” And he answered him, “I am as you are, and as your people are my people, and with you in the war.”

4But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for the word of the LORD.”

4And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Inquire, please, this day for the word of YHWH.”

5So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, four hundred men, and asked them, “Should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or should we refrain?”

“Go up,” they replied, “and God will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

5And the king of Israel gathered together the prophets, four hundred men, and he said to them, “Shall we go against Ramoth-gilead to war, or shall I refrain?” And they said, “Go up, for God will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

6But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire? ”

6And Jehoshaphat said, “Is not here a prophet of YHWH still, that we may inquire of Him?”

7The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man through whom we can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”

“The king should not say that!” Jehoshaphat replied.

7And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man to inquire of YHWH by, and I hate him because he prophesies concerning me not good, but always evil. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” And Jehoshaphat said, “The king should not say thus.”

8So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, “Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.”

8And the king of Israel called to one officer, and he said, “Hasten Micaiah son of Imlah.”

9Dressed in royal attire, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them.

9And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah sat, each man upon his throne, clothed with garments, and they sat at a threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets prophesied before them.

10Now Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘With these you shall gore the Arameans until they are finished off.’”

10And Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself horns of iron, and he said, “Thus says YHWH: ‘With these you shall gore Aram until they are finished.’”

11And all the prophets were prophesying the same, saying, “Go up to Ramoth-gilead and triumph, for the LORD will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

11And all the prophets prophesied thus, saying, “Go up to Ramoth-gilead and prosper, for YHWH will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

Micaiah Prophesies against Ahab

12Then the messenger who had gone to call Micaiah instructed him, “Behold, with one accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak favorably.”

12And the messenger who had gone to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying, “Behold, the words of the prophets with one mouth are good unto the king; and please, let your word be like one of them, and speak good.”

13But Micaiah said, “As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak whatever my God tells me.”

13And Micaiah said, “As YHWH lives, surely that which my God says, that I will speak.”

14When Micaiah arrived, the king asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or should we refrain?”

“Go up and triumph,” Micaiah replied, “for they will be delivered into your hand.”

14And he came to the king, and the king said to him, “Micaiah, shall we go against Ramoth-gilead to the war, or shall I refrain?” And he said, “Go and prosper, and they shall be delivered into your hands.”

15But the king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear not to tell me anything but the truth in the name of the LORD?”

15And the king said to him, “How many times shall I make you swear that you will speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of YHWH?”

16So Micaiah declared:

“I saw all Israel scattered on the hills

like sheep without a shepherd.

And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master;

let each one return home in peace.’”

16And he said, “I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains as sheep that without a shepherd unto them. And YHWH said, ‘No masters are unto these; let each man return to his house in peace.’”

17Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you that he never prophesies good for me, but only bad?”

17And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Did not I say to you that he would not prophesy concerning me good, but only evil?”

18Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing on His right and on His left.

18And he said, “Therefore hear the word of YHWH: I saw YHWH sitting on His throne, and all the host of the heavens standing on His right and His left.

19And the LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab king of Israel to march up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’

And one suggested this, and another that.

19And YHWH said, ‘Who will persuade Ahab king of Israel to go up, that he may fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And this one spoke saying thus, and this one saying thus.

20Then a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will entice him.’

‘By what means?’ asked the LORD.

20And came forward a spirit, and stood before YHWH and said, ‘I will persuade him.’ And YHWH said to him, ‘With what?’

21And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’

‘You will surely entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’

21And he said, ‘I will go out and be a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And He said, ‘You shall persuade and also you shall prevail; go out and do so.’

22So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours, and the LORD has pronounced disaster against you.”

22And behold, YHWH has put a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of these prophets of yours, and YHWH has declared disaster against you.”

23Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in the face, and demanded, “Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go when He departed from me to speak with you?”

23And Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went near, and he struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, “Where is this—the way the Spirit of YHWH passed over from me to speak with you?”

24Micaiah replied, “You will soon see, on that day when you go and hide in an inner room.”

24And Micaiah said, “Behold, you shall see on that day, when you go into an inner chamber to hide.”

25And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah and return him to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king’s son,

25And the king of Israel said, “Take Micaiah and return him to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash son of the king,

26and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”

26and say, ‘Thus says the king: Put this one in the house of restraint, and feed him with bread of affliction and water of affliction, until I return in peace.’”

27But Micaiah replied, “If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me.” Then he added, “Take heed, all you people!”

27And Micaiah said, “If you ever return in peace, YHWH has not spoken by me.” And he said, “Hear, O peoples, all of them!”

Ahab’s Defeat and Death

28So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead.

28And the king of Israel went up—and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah—to Ramoth-gilead.

29And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.

29And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and go into the battle, and you put on your garments.” And the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into the battle.

30Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”

30And the king of Aram had commanded the captains of the chariots who were with him, saying, “Do not fight with the small or with the great, except but with the king of Israel only.”

31When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “This is the king of Israel!” So they turned to fight against him, but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him. God drew them away from him.

31And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, “It is the king of Israel.” And they turned against him to fight, and Jehoshaphat cried out, and YHWH helped him. And God diverted them from him.

32And when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.

32And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from after him.

33However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor. So the king said to his charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”

33And a certain man drew with the bow in his simplicity, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints and between his armor. And he said to the charioteer, “Turn your hand and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded.”

34The battle raged throughout that day, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. And at sunset he died.

34And the battle increased that day, and the king of Israel was propped up in the chariot over against Aram until the evening, and he died at the time of the going in of the sun.
