2 Kings 19
Isaiah’s Message of Deliverance
2And he sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the scribe, and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz
2And he sent Eliakim who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covering themselves with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet son of Amoz.
3to tell him, “This is what Hezekiah says: Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
3And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and blasphemy, for the sons have come to birth, and there is no strength to bring forth.
4Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to defy the living God, and He will rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the remnant that still survives.”
4Perhaps YHWH your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God, and he will decide concerning the words that YHWH your God has heard. And you shall lift up a prayer for the remnant that is found.”
6who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.
6And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, thus says YHWH: ‘Do not be afraid in the face of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.
Sennacherib’s Blasphemous Letter
9Now Sennacherib had been warned about Tirhakah king of Cush:a “Look, he has set out to fight against you.”
So Sennacherib again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
9And he heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, saying, “Behold, he has come out to make war with you.” And he turned and sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
10“Give this message to Hezekiah king of Judah:
‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
10“Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: ‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Hezekiah’s Prayer
14So Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers, read it, and went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.
14And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and he read it and went up to the house of YHWH. And Hezekiah spread it out before the face of YHWH.
15And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD:
“O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
15And Hezekiah prayed before the face of YHWH and said, “O YHWH, God of Israel, dwelling between the cherubim, You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made the heavens and the earth.
Sennacherib’s Fall Prophesied
20Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria.
20And Isaiah son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says YHWH, God of Israel: Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard.
21This is the word that the LORD has spoken against him:
‘The Virgin Daughter of Zion
despises you and mocks you;
the Daughter of Jerusalem
shakes her head behind you.
21This is the word that YHWH has spoken concerning him: ‘She despises you and mocks you, the virgin daughter of Zion. Behind you she has shaken her head, the daughter of Jerusalem.
23Through your servants you have taunted the Lord,
and you have said:
“With my many chariots
I have ascended
to the heights of the mountains,
to the remote peaks of Lebanon.
I have cut down its tallest cedars,
the finest of its cypresses.a
I have reached its farthest outposts,
the densest of its forests.
23By your messengers you have reproached the Lord, and you have said: “By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the limits of Lebanon. And I will cut down the height of its cedars, the choice of its cypresses, and I will enter the ends of its borders, the forest of its orchard.
25Have you not heard?
Long ago I ordained it;
in days of old I planned it.
Now I have brought it to pass,
that you should crush fortified cities
into piles of rubble.
25Did you not hear? Long ago I made it, and from ancient times I formed it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should be for crushing into heaps of ruins fortified cities.
26Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power,
are dismayed and ashamed.
They are like plants in the field,
tender green shoots,
grass on the rooftops,
scorched before it is grown.
26Therefore their dwellers are feeble of hand; they are dismayed and ashamed. They were as the grass of the field, and the greenness of the tender grass, as the grass of the roofs, and blighted before the face of standing grain.
28Because your rage and arrogance against Me
have reached My ears,
I will put My hook in your nose
and My bit in your mouth;
I will send you back
the way you came.’
28Because your raging against me and your tumult have come up to My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way in which you came.’
29And this will be a sign to you, O Hezekiah:
This year you will eat
what grows on its own,
and in the second year
what springs from the same.
But in the third year you will sow and reap;
you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
29And this is a sign to you: You shall eat this year what grows on its own, and in the second year what springs from the same. And in the third year you will sow and reap; and you will plant vineyards and eat their fruits.
32So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria:
‘He will not enter this
city or shoot an arrow
into it. He will not come before it with a shield
or build up a siege ramp against it.
32Therefore thus says YHWH concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He shall not come into this city, nor will he shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor build a mound against it.
Jerusalem Delivered from the Assyrians
35And that very night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
35And it came to pass on that night that the angel of YHWH went out, and he struck in the camp of Assyria a hundred eighty-five thousand; and they rose early in the morning, and behold, all were dead corpses!
37One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezera put him to the sword and escaped to the land of Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
37And it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword, and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his place.
