Acts 1

Prologue

1In my first book, O Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach,

1The first account, indeed, I made concerning all the things, O Theophilus, that Jesus began both to do and to teach,

2until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.

2until the day in which, having given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He chose, He was taken up,

3After His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

3to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, with many convincing proofs, being seen by them through forty days and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God.

4And while they were gathered together, He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss.

4And being assembled together, He instructed them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father: “That which you heard of Me;

5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

5for John indeed baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days after these.”

The Ascension

6So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

6Therefore indeed those having come together were asking Him, saying, “Lord, at this time do You restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.

7And He said to them, “It is not yours to know times or seasons that the Father set by His own authority.

8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

8But you will receive power at the Holy Spirit having come upon you, and you will be My witnesses, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

9After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

9And having said these things, in their looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him from their eyes.

10They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

10And as they were looking intently into heaven in His going, then behold, two men in white apparel stood by them,

11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”

11who also said, “Men, Galileans, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, having been taken up from you into heaven, will thus come in that manner you saw Him going into heaven.”

Matthias Replaces Judas

12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near the city, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, holding a Sabbath’s journey.

13When they arrived, they went to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.

13And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying, both Peter and John, and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.

14With one accord they all continued in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

14All these were steadfastly continuing with one accord in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

15In those days Peter stood up among the brothers ( a gathering of about a hundred and twenty ) and said,

15And in these days, Peter, having risen up in the midst of the brothers, said (and the multitude of names at the same place was about a hundred twenty),

16“Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus.

16“Men, brothers, it was necessary for the Scripture to have been fulfilled that the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, the one having become guide to those having arrested Jesus.

17He was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”

17For he was numbered among us and was allotted the share of this ministry.”

18(Now with the reward for his wickedness Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong and burst open in the middle, and all his intestines spilled out.

18(Then indeed this man acquired a field out of the reward of unrighteousness, and having fallen headlong, he burst open in the middle, and all his intestines poured out.

19This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

19And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20“For it is written in the book of Psalms:

‘May his place be deserted;

let there be no one to dwell in it,’

and,

‘May another take his position.’

20“For it has been written in the book of Psalms: ‘May his homestead become desolate, and let there be no one dwelling in it,’ and, ‘May another take his oversight.’

21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

21Therefore it is necessary for the men having accompanied us in all the time that the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us,

22beginning from John’s baptism until the day Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

22having begun from the baptism of John until the day in which He was taken up from us, one of these, to become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

23So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.

23And they set two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was called upon as Justus, and Matthias.

24And they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen

24And having prayed, they said, “You, Lord, knower of the heart of all, show which one of these two You chose

25to take up this ministry and apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.”

25to take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias. So he was added to the eleven apostles.

26And they gave lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
