Amos 1

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

1These are the words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, in the days when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.

1The words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders from Tekoa—that which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2He said:

“The LORD roars from Zion

and raises His voice from Jerusalem;

the pastures of the shepherds mourn,

and the summit of Carmel withers.”

2And he said: “YHWH roars from Zion, and from Jerusalem He gives forth His voice. And the pastures of the shepherds withers and the head of Carmel mourn.”

3This is what the LORD says:

“For three transgressions of Damascus, even four,

I will not revoke My judgment,

because they threshed Gilead

with sledges of iron.

3Thus says YHWH: “Over three transgressions of Damascus, even over four, I will not turn back—over their threshing Gilead with sledges of iron.

4So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael

to consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.

4And I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it will devour the citadels of Ben-hadad.

5I will break down the gates of Damascus;

I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven

and the one who wields the scepter in Beth-eden.

The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir,”

says the LORD.

5And I will break the bar of Damascus, and I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven and the one holding a scepter from Beth-eden, and the people of Aram will be removed to Kir,” says YHWH.

6This is what the LORD says:

“For three transgressions of Gaza, even four,

I will not revoke My judgment,

because they exiled a whole population,

delivering them up to Edom.

6Thus says YHWH: “Over three transgressions of Gaza, even over four, I will not turn back—over their taking captive a whole captivity, delivering them up to Edom.

7So I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza,

to consume its citadels.

7And I will send a fire upon the wall of Gaza, and it will devour her citadels.

8I will cut off the ruler of Ashdod

and the one who wields the scepter in Ashkelon.

I will turn My hand against Ekron,

and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,”

says the Lord GOD.

8And I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod, and the one holding the scepter from Ashkelon. And I will turn My hand upon Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord YHWH.

9This is what the LORD says:

“For three transgressions of Tyre, even four,

I will not revoke My judgment,

because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to Edom

and broke a covenant of brotherhood.

9Thus says YHWH: “Over three transgressions of Tyre, even over four, I will not turn back—over their delivering up the whole captivity to Edom, and they did not remember the covenant of brotherhood!

10So I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre

to consume its citadels.”

10And I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre, and it will devour her citadels.”

11This is what the LORD says:

“For three transgressions of Edom, even four,

I will not revoke My judgment,

because he pursued his brother with the sword

and stifled all compassion;

his anger raged continually,

and his fury flamed incessantly.

11Thus says YHWH: “Over three transgressions of Edom, even over four, I will not turn back—over his pursuing with the sword his brother, and he destroyed his compassion and tore perpetually with his anger, and his wrath he guarded forever!

12So I will send fire upon Teman

to consume the citadels of Bozrah.”

12And I will send a fire on Teman, and it will devour the citadels of Bozrah!”

13This is what the LORD says:

“For three transgressions of the Ammonites, even four,

I will not revoke My judgment,

because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead

in order to enlarge their territory.

13Thus says YHWH: “Over three transgressions of the sons of Ammon, even over four, I will not turn back—over their ripping open the pregnant women of Gilead, so that they might enlarge their border!

14So I will kindle a fire in the walls of Rabbah

to consume its citadels

amid war cries on the day of battle

and a violent wind on the day of tempest.

14And I will kindle a fire upon the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour her citadels, with a shout in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind!

15Their king will go into exile—

he and his princes together,”

says the LORD.

15And their king will go into exile—he and his princes together,” says YHWH.
