the LORD (Hebrew Yahweh): This is the covenant name of God (Exodus 6:2–3; 20:2) and appears in Daniel only in this chapter.
God remains faithful to his covenant with those who love and obey him (compare Exodus 34:6–7; Deuteronomy 7:9; Romans 8:28). God's unfailing love is his core nature. The Hebrew word is khesed, which is also sometimes translated as “grace,” “mercy,” or “kindness.” It inspires faith, hope, and worship throughout the Bible (see Numbers 14:18; Nehemiah 9:17; Psalms 108:4; 136:1–26; Jonah 2:4; 1 John 4:7–8).
God's faithfulness was very different from his people's unfaithfulness and rebellion. When Daniel confessed his people's sins, he included himself (Daniel 9:5), even though he lived a praiseworthy life (see “Community Identity” Theme Note).
Daniel prayed a high priestly prayer for his people, using many quotes and references from the Torah (the instructions God gave through Moses), the prophets (God’s messengers), and the psalms (songs and prayers used in worship).
Daniel prayed for his people, knowing that Jerusalem's seventy years of desolation were about to end. His prayer is similar to those of:
Solomon (1 Kings 8:14–61),
Ezra (Ezra 9), and
Nehemiah (Nehemiah 9).
God answered Daniel's prayer quickly (see study note on Daniel 9:19; see also Daniel 9:20–27).
