If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds some indecency in her, he may write her a certificate of divorce, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.

When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

Notes

  • some indecency: This phrase refers to sexual impurity or another wrongdoing. It does not relate to adultery, which would have required the death penalty (22:22).

  • a certificate of divorce: This was a concession. Starting a divorce in such cases was optional and not always preferable (see Malachi 2:16; Matthew 5:31–32; Mark 10:2–12).
