Ezekiel 28
A Prophecy against the Ruler of Tyre
2“Son of man, tell the ruler of Tyre that this is what the Lord GOD says:
Your heart is proud,
and you have said,
‘I am a god;
I sit in the seat of gods
in the heart of the sea.’
Yet you are a man and not a god,
though you have regarded your heart
as that of a god.
2“Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, thus says the Lord YHWH: Because your heart is lifted up, and you say, ‘I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods, in the midst of the seas,’ and you are a man and not a god, and you give your heart as the heart of a god,
7behold, I will bring foreigners against you,
the most ruthless of nations.
They will draw their swords
against the beauty of your wisdom
and will defile your splendor.
7therefore, behold, I am bringing upon you strangers, the ruthless of the nations! And they will draw out their swords against the beauty of your wisdom, and they will defile your splendor.
A Lament for the King of Tyre
12“Son of man, take up a lament for the king of Tyre and tell him that this is what the Lord GOD says:
‘You were the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
12“Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, thus says the Lord YHWH: ‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty!
13You were in Eden,
the garden of God.
Every kind of precious stone adorned you:a
ruby, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,b turquoise, and emerald.
Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold,
prepared on the day of your creation.
13You were in Eden, the garden of God, with every precious stone your covering—ruby, topaz, and diamond; beryl, onyx, and jasper; sapphire, turquoise, and emerald; and of gold was the workmanship of your timbrels and pipes, established for you on the day of your creation.
16By the vastness of your trade,
you were filled with violence, and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace
from the mountain of God,
and I banished you, O guardian cherub,
from among the fiery stones.
16With the abundance of your trading, your midst became filled with violence, and you sinned; and I drove you in disgrace from the mountain of God, and I made you depart, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
17Your heart grew proud of your beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor;
so I cast you to the earth;
I made you a spectacle before kings.
17Your heart was lifted up in your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor! Upon the ground I cast you; before the faces of kings I set you that they might gaze at you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities
and the dishonesty of your trading
you have profaned your sanctuaries.
So I made fire come from within you,
and it consumed you.
I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the eyes of all who saw you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities, with the injustice of your trading, you have profaned your holy places. And I have brought forth fire from your midst; it has devoured you, and I have given you to ashes upon the earth, before the eyes of all those looking at you!
A Prophecy against Sidon
22And you are to declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:
‘Behold, I am against you, O Sidon,
and I will be glorified within you.
They will know that I am the LORD
when I execute judgments against her
and demonstrate My holiness through her.
22And say, thus says the Lord YHWH: ‘Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, and I will be glorified in your midst; and they will know that I am YHWH, in my making judgments against her, and I display My holiness against her.
23I will send a plague against her
and shed blood in her streets;
the slain will fall within her,
while the sword is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the LORD.
23For I will send against her pestilence, and blood in her streets; and the slain will fall in her midst, by the sword against her on every side—and they will know that I am YHWH!
24For the people of Israel will no longer face a pricking brier or a painful thorn from all around them who treat them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.’
24And there will be no longer for the house of Israel a brier bringing malice or a thorn giving pain from all those around them who despise them; and they will know that I am the Lord YHWH.’
The Restoration of Israel
25This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they have been scattered, I will show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations.
Then they will dwell in their own land, which I have given to My servant Jacob.
25Thus says the Lord YHWH: ‘In My gathering the house of Israel from the peoples, among whom they are scattered, and I will show Myself holy among them before the eyes of the nations, and they will dwell in their own land that I gave to My servant Jacob.
26And there they will dwell securely, build houses, and plant vineyards. They will dwell securely when I execute judgments against all those around them who treat them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.’”
26And they will dwell upon it in safety, and they will build houses and plant vineyards, and they will dwell in safety, with My making judgments against all those despising them from around them. And they will know that I am YHWH their God.’”
