Ezekiel 40
The Man with a Measuring Rod
1In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month—in the fourteenth year after Jerusalem had been struck down—on that very day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He took me there.
1In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was captured, on this very day, the hand of YHWH was upon me, and He took me there.
2In visions of God He took me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain, on whose southern slope was a structure that resembled a city.
2In visions of God, He brought me to the land of Israel, and made me rest on a very high mountain; and on it was like the structure of a city on the south.
3So He took me there, and I saw a man whose appearance was like bronze. He was standing in the gateway with a linen cord and a measuring rod in his hand.
3And He brought me there, and behold, a man whose appearance was like the appearance of bronze, and He had a cord of flax in his hand, and a rod for measuring, and he was standing in the gateway.
4“Son of man,” he said to me, “look with your eyes, hear with your ears, and pay attention to everything I am going to show you, for that is why you have been brought here. Report to the house of Israel everything you see.”
4And the man said to me: “Son of man, look with your eyes, and with your ears hear, and set your heart to all that I am going to show you; for that I might show it to you, you were brought here. Declare all that you see to the house of Israel!”
The East Gate
5And I saw a wall surrounding the temple area. Now the length of the measuring rod in the man’s hand was six long cubitsa (each measuring a cubit and a handbreadth), and he measured the wall to be one rod thick and one rod high.
5And behold, a wall on the outside of the temple all around, and in the hand of the man was a rod measuring six cubits, by a cubit and a handbreadth. And he measured the width of the structure, one rod, and the height, one rod.
6Then he came to the gate facing east and climbed its steps. He measured the threshold of the gate to be one rod deep.a
6And he went to the gateway of which its face was toward the east, and he went up on its steps and measured the threshold of the gateway, one rod deep, even one threshold, one rod deep.
7Each gate chamber was one rod long and one rod wide, and there were five cubitsa between the gate chambers. The inner threshold of the gate by the portico facing inward was one rod deep.
7And the gate chamber was one rod long, and one rod wide; and between the gate chambers five cubits; and the threshold of the gateway by the porch of the gate inside was one rod.
10There were three gate chambers on each side of the east gate, each with the same measurements, and the gateposts on either side also had the same measurements.
10And the chambers of the gateway toward the east were three on this side, and three on this side; a single measure unto the three, and a single measure was unto the gateposts on this side and on this side.
13Then he measured the gateway from the roof of one gate chamber to the roof of the opposite one; the distance was twenty-five cubitsa from doorway to doorway.
13And he measured the gateway from the roof of the one chamber to the roof of the, and the width was twenty-five cubits, door over against door.
16The gate chambers and their side pillarsa had beveled windows all around the inside of the gateway. The porticos also had windows all around on the inside. Each side pillar was decorated with palm trees.
16And were beveled windows in the gate chambers, and in their side pillars on the inside of the gateway all around, and likewise in the porticos; and were windows all around on the inside, and on each side pillar were palm trees.
The Outer Court
19Then he measured the distance from the front of the lower gateway to the outside of the inner court; it was a hundred cubitsa on the east side as well as on the north.
19And he measured the width from the front of the lower gateway to the front of the inner court on the outside, a hundred cubits toward the east and the north.
The North Gate
21Its three gate chambers on each side, its side pillars, and its portico all had the same measurements as the first gate: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
21And its chambers were three on this side and three on this side; and for its side pillars and its porticos it was according to the measure of the first gate—fifty cubits its length, and its width five and twenty by the cubit.
22Its windows, portico, and palm trees had the same measurements as those of the gate facing east. Seven steps led up to it, with its portico opposite them.
22And its windows, and its porticos, and its palm trees, were according to the measure of the gateway that had its face toward the east; and with seven steps they ascend on it, and its portico was opposite them.
23There was a gate to the inner court facing the north gate, just as there was on the east. He measured the distance from gateway to gateway to be a hundred cubits.
23And a gate was for the inner court opposite the gateway to the north, like that to the east; and he measured from gateway to gateway a hundred cubits.
The South Gate
24Then he led me to the south side, and I saw a gateway facing south. He measured its side pillars and portico, and they had the same measurements as the others.
24And he brought me toward the south, and behold, a gateway toward the south, and he measured its side pillars and its porticos according to these measurements.
The Gates of the Inner Court
29Its gate chambers, side pillars, and portico had the same measurements as the others. Both the gateway and its portico had windows all around; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
29And its gate chambers and its side pillars and its porticos were also according to these measurements. Windows were for it and for its porticos all around—fifty cubits long, and twenty-five cubits wide.
33Its gate chambers, side pillars, and portico had the same measurements as the others. Both the gateway and its portico had windows all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
33And its gate chambers and its side pillars and its porticos were also according to these measurements. And windows were for it and for its porticos all around, fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits wide.
Eight Tables for Sacrifices
39Inside the portico of the gateway were two tables on each side, on which the burnt offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings were to be slaughtered.
39And in the portico of the gateway were two tables on this side and two tables on this side, to slaughter on them the burnt offering and the sin offering and the guilt offering.
40Outside, as one goes up to the entrance of the north gateway, there were two tables on one side and two more tables on the other side of the gate’s portico.
40And at the shoulder on the outside, as one goes up to the entrance of the north gateway, were two tables; and on the other side of the portico of the gateway were two tables.
42There were also four tables of dressed stone for the burnt offering, each a cubit and a half long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit high.a On these were placed the utensils used to slaughter the burnt offerings and the other sacrifices.
42And four tables were for the burnt offering, hewn stones one cubit and a half long, and one cubit and a half wide, and one cubit high; and on them they laid the instruments with which they slaughtered the burnt offering and the sacrifice.
Chambers for Ministry
44Outside the inner gate, within the inner court, were two chambers,a one beside the north gate and facing south, and another beside the south gateb and facing north.
44And on the outside of the inner gate were two chambers in the inner court, at the side of the gateway to the north; and their faces were toward the south, one at the side of the south gate were facing toward the north.
46and the chamber that faces north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok, the only Levites who may approach the LORD to minister before Him.”
46And the chamber that faces toward the north is for the priests keeping guard of the altar; they are the sons of Zadok, those coming near from all the sons of Levi, unto YHWH to minister to Him.”
The Inner Court
48Then he brought me to the portico of the temple and measured the side pillars of the portico to be five cubits on each side. The width of the gateway was fourteen cubits and its sidewalls were three cubits on either side.a
48And he brought me to the portico of the temple, and he measured the doorposts of the portico, five cubits on this side, and five cubits on this side; and the width of the gateway was fourteen cubits and its sidewalls were three cubits on this side, and three cubits on this side.
49The portico was twenty cubits widea and twelve cubits deep,b and ten steps led up to it.c There were columns by the side pillars, one on each side.
49The length of the portico was twenty cubits, and the width was twelve cubits, and by the ten steps that they went up to it; and pillars were by the doorposts, one on this side, and one on this side.
