Haggai 1

A Call to Rebuild the Temple

1In the second year of the reign of Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, stating

1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of YHWH came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying:

2that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

“These people say, ‘The time has not yet come

to rebuild the house of the LORD.’”

2Thus speaks YHWH of Hosts, saying: “This people says, ‘The time has not come, the time for the house of YHWH to be built.’”

3Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying:

3And the word came of YHWH by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying:

4“Is it a time for you yourselves

to live in your paneled houses,

while this house lies in ruins?”

4“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this house is desolate?”

5Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

“Consider carefully your ways.

5And now, thus says YHWH of Hosts: “Set your heart upon your ways.

6You have planted much

but harvested little.

You eat but never have enough.

You drink but never have your fill.

You put on clothes but never get warm.

You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.”

6You have sown much, and you have brought in little; you eat, and not to satisfaction; you drink, and not to drunkenness; One wears clothes, and there is no warmth to it; and the wage earner earns wages into a bag pierced through.”

7This is what the LORD of Hosts says:

“Consider carefully your ways.

7Thus says YHWH of Hosts: “Set your heart upon your ways.

8Go up into the hills,

bring down lumber, and build the house,

so that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,

says the LORD.

8Go up to the mountains, and bring wood, and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified, says YHWH.

9You expected much,

but behold, it amounted to little.

And what you brought home, I blew away.

Why? declares the LORD of Hosts.

Because My house still lies in ruins,

while each of you is busy

with his own house.

9You turned for much, and behold, little; and you brought it home, and I blew it away. Because of what? An utterance of YHWH of Hosts, because of My house, the way that it is in ruins, while you are running, each man to his house.

10Therefore, on account of you

the heavens have withheld their dew

and the earth has withheld its crops.

10Upon thus, the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.

11I have summoned a drought

on the fields and on the mountains,

on the grain, new wine, and oil,

and on whatever the ground yields,

on man and beast,

and on all the labor of your hands.”

11And I have called for a drought on the land, and on the mountains, and on the grain and on the new wine and on the oil, and on whatever the ground brings forth, and on mankind and on the livestock, and on all the labor of the hands.”

The People Obey

12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD.

12And Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, along with all the remnant of the people, listened to the voice of YHWH their God and to the words of Haggai the prophet, because YHWH their God had sent him; and the people were afraid before the face of YHWH.

13Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message of the LORD to the people:

“I am with you,”

declares the LORD.

13And Haggai the messenger of YHWH spoke the message of YHWH to the people, saying: “I am with you,” a declaration of YHWH.

14So the LORD stirred the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and began the work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God,

14And YHWH stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work on the house of YHWH of Hosts, their God,
