Read Hebrews 4

Translations

Modern
For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.
Traditional
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
Literal
For also we are those having had the gospel proclaimed, even as also those; but the word of their hearing did not profit those not having been united with the faith of those having heard.
Latin
Etenim et nobis nuntiatum est, quemadmodum et illis: sed non profuit illis sermo auditus, non admistus fidei ex iis quæ audierunt.

Original

Greek
English
For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.

Notes

  • This good news is the message of salvation (Hebrews 2:3–4).

  • They lacked the faith of those who listened to God. Some manuscripts say they didn’t combine what they heard with faith. In both cases, the listeners had weak faith and did not trust God's promise.

The author moves to the promise that the faithful will enter God's rest and urges listeners to take this promise seriously. Hearing alone is not enough. Listening must be combined with faith.
