Isaiah 11

The Root of Jesse

1Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse,

and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.

1A branch there will come forth from the stump of Jesse, and a fresh shoot from his roots will bear fruit.

2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—

the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the Spirit of counsel and strength,

the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.

2And will rest upon Him the Spirit of YHWH, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of YHWH.

3And He will delight in the fear of the LORD.

He will not judge by what His eyes see,

and He will not decide by what His ears hear,

3And His delight is in the fear of YHWH, and by the sight of His eyes He will not judge, and not by the hearing of his ears He will decide.

4but with righteousness He will judge the poor,

and with equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth.

He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth

and slay the wicked with the breath of His lips.

4And He will judge the lowly with righteousness, and He will decide with straightness for the poor of the earth; and He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.

5Righteousness will be the belt around His hips,

and faithfulness the sash around His waist.

5And righteousness will be the girdle of His waist, and faithfulness the girdle of His loins.

6The wolf will live with the lamb,

and the leopard will lie down with the goat;

the calf and young lion and fatling will be together,

and a little child will lead them.

6And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together, and a little child will lead them.

7The cow will graze with the bear,

their young will lie down together,

and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

7And the cow and the bear will graze; their young will lie down together, and the lion like the ox will eat straw.

8The infant will play by the cobra’s den,

and the toddler will reach into the viper’s nest.

8And the suckling will play over the hole of a cobra, and over the den of a viper the one being weaned will stretch out his hand.

9They will neither harm nor destroy

on all My holy mountain,

for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD

as the sea is full of water.

9They will not harm and they will not destroy in all the mountain of My holiness; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of YHWH, as the waters are covering the sea.

10On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.

10And in that day it will come to pass that the root of Jesse, which is standing, will be as a banner for the peoples; The nations will seek Him out, and His resting place will be in glory.

11On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

11And it will come to pass in that day that the Lord will add a second time with His hand to recover the remnant of His people who will remain from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

12He will raise a banner for the nations

and gather the exiles of Israel;

He will collect the scattered of Judah

from the four corners of the earth.

12And He will lift up a banner for the nations, and He will gather the banished ones of Israel, and the dispersed ones of Judah He will gather together from the four wings of the earth.

13Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart,

and the adversaries of Judah will be cut off.

Ephraim will no longer envy Judah,

nor will Judah harass Ephraim.

13And the jealousy of Ephraim will be turned aside, and the adversaries of Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will not envy Judah and Judah will not harass Ephraim.

14They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west;

together they will plunder the sons of the east.

They will lay their hands on Edom and Moab,

and the Ammonites will be subject to them.

14And they will fly down on the shoulder of the Philistines westward; together they will plunder the sons of the east. Upon Edom and Moab they will send forth their hands, and the sons of Ammon will be their subjects.

15The LORD will devote to destruction

the gulf of the Sea of Egypt;

with a scorching wind He will sweep His hand

over the Euphrates.

He will split it into seven streams

for men to cross with dry sandals.

15And YHWH will devote to destruction the tongue of the Sea of Egypt, and He will wave His hand over the River with the might of His wind, and will strike it into seven streams, for one to tread in sandals.

16There will be a highway for the remnant of His people

who remain from Assyria,

as there was for Israel

when they came up from the land of Egypt.

16And there will be a highway for the remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as it was for Israel in the day of his coming up from the land of Egypt.
