Isaiah 63

God’s Vengeance on the Nations

1Who is this coming from Edom,

from Bozrah with crimson-stained garments?

Who is this robed in splendor,

marching in the greatness of His strength?

“It is I, proclaiming vindication,

mighty to save.”

1Who is this coming from Edom, in crimsoned garments from Bozrah, this One glorious in His apparel, traveling in the greatness of His strength? “It is I, proclaiming vindication, mighty to save.”

2Why are Your clothes red,

and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?

2Why is red unto Your clothing, and Your garments like one treading in the winepress?

3“I have trodden the winepress alone,

and no one from the nations was with Me.

I trampled them in My anger

and trod them down in My fury;

their blood spattered My garments,

and all My clothes were stained.

3“The winepress I have trodden by myself alone, and from the peoples no man was with me; and I trampled them in My anger, and I trampled them in My fury, and their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, and all My clothes I have stained.

4For the day of vengeance was in My heart,

and the year of My redemption had come.

4For the day of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redeeming has come!

5I looked, but there was no one to help;

I was appalled that no one assisted.

So My arm brought Me salvation,

and My own wrath upheld Me.

5And I looked, and there was no one helping, and I was dismayed that there was no one to uphold; and My own arm brought salvation for Me, and it was My own wrath that upheld Me.

6I trampled the nations in My anger;

in My wrath I made them drunk

and poured out their blood on the ground.”

6And I trampled the peoples in My anger, and made them drunk in My wrath, and I poured out to the earth” their blood!

God’s Mercies Recalled

7I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion

and His praiseworthy acts,

because of all that the LORD has done for us—

the many good things for the house of Israel

according to His great compassion and loving devotion.

7The loving devotion of YHWH I will recount, the praises of YHWH, according to all that YHWH has done for us, and the abundant goodness to the house of Israel that He has done for them, according to His compassion, and according to the abundance of His loving devotion.

8For He said, “They are surely My people,

sons who will not be disloyal.”

So He became their Savior.

8And He said, “Surely they are My people, sons not unfaithful.” And He was unto them as a Savior.

9In all their distress, He too was afflicted,

and the Angel of His Presence saved them.

In His love and compassion He redeemed them;

He lifted them up and carried them

all the days of old.

9In all their distress, he was afflicted, and the Angel of His Presence saved them; in His love and in His compassion He redeemed them, and He lifted them and carried them all the days of old.

10But they rebelled

and grieved His Holy Spirit.

So He turned and became their enemy,

and He Himself fought against them.

10And they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; and He turned Himself against them as an enemy, and He fought against them.

11Then His people remembered the days of old,

the days of Moses.

Where is He who brought them through the sea

with the shepherds of His flock?

Where is the One who set

His Holy Spirit among them,

11And He remembered the days of old, of Moses and his people: Where is the One who brought them up from the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is is the One who set within him His Holy Spirit,

12who sent His glorious arm

to lead them by the right hand of Moses,

who divided the waters before them

to gain for Himself everlasting renown,

12the One leading them by the right hand of Moses the arm of His glory, dividing the waters before their face, to make for Himself an everlasting name;

13who led them through the depths

like a horse in the wilderness,

so that they did not stumble?

13the One leading them through the depths like a horse in the wilderness; they did not stumble?

14Like cattle going down to the valley,

the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest.

You led Your people this way

to make for Yourself a glorious name.

14As the beast goes down into the valley, the Spirit of YHWH gave them rest—thus You led Your people, to make for Yourself a glorious name.

A Prayer for Mercy

15Look down from heaven and see,

from Your holy and glorious habitation.

Where are Your zeal and might?

Your yearning and compassion for me are restrained.

15Look down from the heavens and see, from the habitation of Your holiness and Your glory! Where is Your zeal and Your strength, the groaning of Your bowels and Your compassion toward me—are they restrained?

16Yet You are our Father,

though Abraham does not know us

and Israel does not acknowledge us.

You, O LORD, are our Father;

our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

16For You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us, You, O YHWH, are our Father, Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

17Why, O LORD, do You make us stray from Your ways

and harden our hearts from fearing You?

Return, for the sake of Your servants,

the tribes of Your heritage.

17Why do You let us stray O YHWH, from Your ways, and harden our hearts from fearing You? Return Your servants for the sake of the tribes of Your inheritance.

18For a short while Your people possessed Your holy place,

but our enemies have trampled Your sanctuary.

18For a short time Your holy people possessed it; our adversaries have trampled Your sanctuary.

19We have become like those You never ruled,

like those not called by Your name.

19From of old we have been You had not ruled over them, those not called by Your name.
