Jeremiah 43

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

1When Jeremiah had finished telling all the people all the words of the LORD their God—everything that the LORD had sent him to say—

1And it came to pass when Jeremiah had stopped speaking to all the people all the words of YHWH their God, which YHWH their God had sent him to them all these words,

2Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to reside there.’

2that Azariah son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men spoke to Jeremiah, saying: “You are speaking falsehood! YHWH our God has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to dwell there.

3Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, so that they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon!”

3For Baruch son of Neriah has been inciting you against us in order to give us into the hand of the Chaldeans, to put us to death, or to carry us away captive to Babylon.

4So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces disobeyed the command of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah.

4And Johanan son of Kareah, and all the captains, of the forces and all the people would not listen to the voice of YHWH to dwell in the land of Judah.

5Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the whole remnant of Judah, those who had returned to the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been scattered,

5And Johanan son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces took all the remnant of Judah, those who had returned from all the nations to which they had been driven there, to dwell in the land of Judah—

6the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, and everyone whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had allowed to remain with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.

6the men, and the women, and the sons and daughters of the king, and every soul whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guards had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch son of Neriah.

7So they entered the land of Egypt because they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they went as far as Tahpanhes.

7And they came to the land of Egypt, for they did not listen to the voice of YHWH, and they came as far as Tahpanhes.

8Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes:

8And the word of YHWH to came Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying:

9“In the sight of the Jews, pick up some large stones and bury them in the clay of the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes.

9“Take in your hand large stones and hide them in the mortar in the brick that is at the entrance to house of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes, before the eyes of the men of the Jews.

10Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will send for My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones that I have embedded, and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.

10And say to them, thus says YHWH of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am sending and I will bring Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his pavilion over them.

11He will come and strike down the land of Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword.

11And he will come and he will strike the land of Egypt—those for death to death, and those for captivity to captivity, and those for the sword to the sword.

12I will kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and Nebuchadnezzar will burn those temples and take their gods as captives. So he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will depart from there unscathed.

12And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and carry them away captive, and he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as the shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will go forth from there in peace.

13He will demolish the sacred pillars of the temple of the sun in the land of Egypt, and he will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”

13And he will break the pillars of Heliopolis that are in the land of Egypt, and the houses of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.
