John 7

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.

1And after these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was not wanting to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.

2However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.

2Now the feast of the Jews—that of Booths—was near.

3So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.

3Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples will also see Your works that You do.

4For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”

4For no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be in public. If You do these things, manifest Yourself to the world.”

5For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.

5For not even His brothers were believing in Him.

6Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.

6Therefore Jesus says to them, “My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready.

7The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.

7The world is not able to hate you; but it hates Me, because I testify about it that its works are evil.

8Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”

8You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet been fulfilled.”

9Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.

9And having said these things Himself, He remained in Galilee.

10But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.

10But when His brothers went up to the feast, then He also went up—not openly, but as in secret.

11So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”

11Therefore the Jews were seeking Him in the feast and were saying, “Where is that One?”

12Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”

12And there was much murmuring about Him among the crowds. Indeed, some were saying, “He is good.” But others were saying, “No, but He deceives the crowd.”

13Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.

13No one, however, was speaking publicly about Him, because of the fear of the Jews.

14About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.

14And it being now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and was teaching.

15The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”

15Therefore the Jews were marveling, saying, “How has this One known writings, not having learned?”

16“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.

16Therefore Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not of Me, but of the One having sent Me.

17If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.

17If anyone should desire to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God, or I speak from Myself.

18He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.

18The one speaking from himself seeks his own glory, but the One seeking the glory of the One having sent Him, He is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.

19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”

19Has not Moses given to you the law? And none of you does the law. Why do you seek to kill Me?”

20“You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”

20The crowd answered, “You have a demon. Who seeks to kill You?”

21Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.

21Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel.

22But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)

22Because of this Moses has given to you the circumcision—not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers—and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.

23If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?

23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses might not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made the whole man sound on the Sabbath?

24Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”

24Do not judge according to appearance, but judge the righteous judgment.”

Is Jesus the Christ?

25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?

25Therefore some of those of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not whom they seek to kill?

26Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?

26And behold, He speaks publicly, and they say nothing ever to Him. Did the rulers truly know that this is the Christ?

27But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”

27But we know this man, where He is from. But the Christ, when He may come, no one knows where He is from.”

28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,

28Therefore Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You know Me and you know where I am from. And I have not come of Myself, but the One having sent Me is true, whom you do not know.

29but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”

29I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

30Therefore they were seeking to seize Him, but no one laid the hand upon Him, because His hour had not yet come.

31Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”

31But many out of the crowd believed in Him and were saying, “When the Christ shall come, will He do more signs than this man did?”

32When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.

32The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers so that they might seize Him.

33So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.

33Therefore Jesus said, “Yet a little time I am with you, and I go to the One having sent Me.

34You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”

34You will seek Me and will not find Me; and where I am, you are not able to come.”

35At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

35Therefore the Jews said among themselves, “Where is He about to go that we will not find Him? Is He about to go to the Diaspora among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

36What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

36What is this word that He said, ‘You will seek Me, and will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you are not able to come’?”

Living Water

37On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

37Now in the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone may thirst, let him come to Me and drink.

38Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’”

38The one believing in Me, as the Scripture said: ‘Out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.’”

39He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

39Now He said this about the Spirit, whom those having believed in Him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division over Jesus

40On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”

40Therefore, having heard these words, some of the crowd were saying, “This is truly the Prophet.”

41Others declared, “This is the Christ.”

But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?

41Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” But others were saying, “How indeed does the Christ come out of Galilee?

42Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”

42Did not the Scripture say that out of the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was, comes the Christ?”

43So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.

43Therefore a division happened in the crowd because of Him.

44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.

44Now some of them were wanting to seize Him, but no one laid the hands on Him.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”

45Therefore the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”

46“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.

46The officers answered, “Never did a man speak thus, as this man speaks!”

47“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.

47Therefore the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?

48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?

48Did anyone out of the rulers or out of the Pharisees believe in Him?

49But this crowd that does not know the law—they are under a curse.”

49But this crowd, not knowing the law, they are accursed.”

50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,

50Nicodemus, the one having come to Him before, being one of them, says to them,

51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”

51“Does our law judge the man unless it should first hear from him and know what he does?”

52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”

52They answered and said to him, “Are you also out of Galilee? Search and see that out of Galilee a prophet is not raised.”

53Then each went to his own home.

53And each went to his home.
