Jonah 1

Jonah Flees from the LORD

1Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,

1And the word of YHWH came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying:

2“Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”

2“Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before My face!”

3Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

3And Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish, away from the face of YHWH. And he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, and he paid its fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the face of YHWH.

The Great Storm

4Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.

4And YHWH hurled a great wind toward the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, and the ship was thinking to be broken apart.

5The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

5And the sailors were afraid, and each man cried out to his god. And they threw the articles that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it from them. And Jonah had gone down into the recesses of the ship, and he had lain down and was deeply asleep.

6The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

6And the chief pilot came near to him and said to him: “How can you sleep? Stand up and call to your God! Perhaps your God will have consideration for us and we will not perish!”

7“Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that is upon us.”

So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

7And they said, each man to his companion, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know by whom this evil is upon us!” And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”

8And they said to him, “Declare now to us, with regard to whom is this evil upon us? What is your occupation, and from where do you come? What is your land, and from which people are you?”

9“I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”

9And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew and YHWH, God of the heavens, I fear, who made the sea and the dry land.”

10Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

10And the men feared with great fear, and they said to him: “What is this you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing away from the face of YHWH, because he had told them.

Jonah Cast into the Sea

11Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”

11And they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may become quiet around us?” For the sea was going on and raging.

12“Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”

12And he said to them, “Pick me up and cast me into the sea, and the sea will become quiet around you. For I know that because of me this great tempest is upon you.”

13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea was raging against them more and more.

13And the men dug in to return to the land, and they were not able, for the sea was going on and raging against them.

14So they cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”

14And they cried out to YHWH and said: “Ah, O YHWH, please do not let us perish for the soul of this man, and do not put upon us innocent blood. For You, O YHWH, have done as You pleased.”

15Then they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm.

15And they picked up Jonah, and they cast him into the sea, and the sea stood from its raging.

16Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him.

16And the men feared YHWH with great fear, and they offered a sacrifice to YHWH, and they vowed vows.

17Now the LORD had appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of the fish.

17And YHWH appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights.
