Joshua 18

The Remainder Divided

1Then the whole congregation of Israel assembled at Shiloh and set up the Tent of Meeting there. And though the land was subdued before them,

1And all the congregation of the sons of Israel assembled at Shiloh, and they set up there the Tent of Meeting, and the land was subdued before them.

2there were still seven tribes of Israel who had not yet received their inheritance.

2And there remained among the sons of Israel seven tribes that had not yet received their inheritance.

3So Joshua said to the Israelites, “How long will you put off entering and possessing the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?

3And Joshua said to the sons of Israel, “How long will you neglect to go in to possess the land that YHWH, God of your fathers, has given to you?

4Appoint three men from each tribe, and I will send them out to survey the land and map it out, according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me

4Appoint from among you three men for the tribe, and I will send them, and they shall rise and go through the land and survey it according to their inheritance, and they shall come to me.

5and divide the land into seven portions. Judah shall remain in their territory in the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory in the north.

5And they shall divide it into seven parts. Judah shall remain in their territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory on the north.

6When you have mapped out the seven portions of land and brought it to me, I will cast lots for you here in the presence of the LORD our God.

6And you shall write down the land in seven portions and bring it to me here, that I may cast for you lots here before the face of YHWH our God.

7The Levites, however, have no portion among you, because their inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD. And Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received the inheritance that Moses the servant of the LORD gave them beyond the Jordan to the east.”

7But no portion is for the Levites in your midst, for the priesthood of YHWH is their inheritance. And Gad and Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of YHWH gave them.”

8As the men got up to go out, Joshua commanded them to map out the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will cast lots for you here in Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”

8And the men arose and went, and Joshua commanded those who went to write down the land, saying, “Go and walk up and down in the land, and describe it, and return to me, and here I will cast for you lots before the face of YHWH in Shiloh.”

9So the men departed and went throughout the land, mapping it city by city into seven portions. Then they returned with the document to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh.

9And the men went and passed through the land, and they wrote it down by the cities in seven parts in a book, and they came to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh.

10And Joshua cast lots for them in the presence of the LORD at Shiloh, where he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their divisions.

10And Joshua cast for them lots in Shiloh before the face of YHWH, and there Joshua divided the land to the sons of Israel according to their divisions.

Benjamin’s Inheritance

11The first lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Benjamin. Their allotted territory lay between the tribes of Judah and Joseph:

11And came up the lot of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin by their clans, and the territory of their lot came out between the sons of Judah and between the sons of Joseph.

12On the north side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of Jericho, headed west through the hill country, and came out at the wilderness of Beth-aven.

12And their border began on the north side at the Jordan, and the border went up to the shoulder of Jericho on the north, and it went up through the hill country westward, and its outgoing was at the Wilderness of Beth-aven.

13From there the border crossed over to the southern slope of Luz (that is, Bethel) and went down to Ataroth-addar on the hill south of Lower Beth-horon.

13And the border went over from there toward Luz, to the shoulder of Luz (that is, Bethel) southward, and the border descended to Ataroth-addar, near the hill that is on the south of Lower Beth-horon.

14On the west side the border curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.

14And the border extended and has gone round to the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that is at the front of Beth-horon southward, and it ended at Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the west side.

15On the south side the border began at the outskirts of Kiriath-jearim and extended westward to the spring at the Waters of Nephtoah.

15And the south side is at the end of Kiriath-jearim, and the border extended on the west and went out to the spring at the Waters of Nephtoah.

16Then it went down to the foot of the hill that faces the Valley of Ben-hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim and ran down the Valley of Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and downward to En-rogel.

16And the border came down to the end of the mountain that is upon the face of the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is in the Valley of Rephaim on the north, and descended to the Valley of Hinnom, to the shoulder of the Jebusite on the south, and descended to En-rogel.

17From there it curved northward and proceeded to En-shemesh and on to Geliloth facing the Ascent of Adummim, and continued down to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.

17And it went around from the north, and went out to En-shemesh, and extended toward Geliloth, which is before the Ascent of Adummim, and descended to the stone of Bohan son of Reuben,

18Then it went on to the northern slope of Beth-arabah and went down into the valley.

18and it passed over to the slope of Beth-arabah northward, and went down to the Arabah.

19The border continued to the northern slope of Beth-hoglah and came out at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the mouth of the Jordan. This was the southern border.

19And the border passed over to the shoulder of Beth-hoglah northward, and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This is the south border.

20On the east side the border was the Jordan.

These were the borders around the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin.

20And the Jordan bordered it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin, according to its boundaries all around, by their clans.
