Luke 10

Jesus Sends the Seventy-Two

1After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place He was about to visit.

1Now after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy-two others and sent them in two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.

2And He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.

2And He was saying to them, “The harvest indeed is much, but the workers few. Therefore implore the Lord of the harvest that He might put forth workers into His harvest.

3Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

3Go! Behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves.

4Carry no purse or bag or sandals. Do not greet anyone along the road.

4Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road.

5Whatever house you enter, begin by saying, ‘Peace to this house.’

5And into whatever house you might enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’

6If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.

6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.

7Stay at the same house, eating and drinking whatever you are offered. For the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking the things unto them; for the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move from house to house.

8If you enter a town and they welcome you, eat whatever is set before you.

8And into whatever city you may enter and they may receive you, eat the things set before you.

9Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’

9And heal the ailing in it, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’

10But if you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go into the streets and declare,

10But into whatever city you might enter and they may not receive you, having gone out into its streets, say,

11‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off as a testimony against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’

11‘Even the dust of your city having clung to our feet we wipe off against you; yet know this, that the kingdom of God has drawn near.’

12I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

12I say to you that for Sodom in that day it will be more bearable than for that city.

Woe to the Unrepentant

13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles having happened in you had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.

15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades!

15And you, Capernaum, to heaven will you be lifted up? To Hades you will be brought down!

16Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you rejects Me; and whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

16The one hearing you hears Me, and the one setting you aside sets Me aside, and the one setting Me aside sets aside the One having sent Me.”

The Joyful Return

17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”

17And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

18So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

18And He said to them, “I was beholding Satan having fallen like lightning out of heaven.

19Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.

19Behold, I have given you the authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and on all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.

20Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

20But do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names have been written in the heavens.”

Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving

21At that time Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.

21In the same hour, He exulted in the Holy Spirit and said, “I acknowledge You, Father, Lord of heaven and of the earth, because You hid away these things from the wise and intelligent, and You revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, because of thus it was good pleasure before You.

22All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”

22All things were delivered to Me by My Father. And no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and the one to whom the Son may resolve to reveal Him.”

23Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

23And having turned to the disciples, He said in private, “Blessed are the eyes seeing what you see.

24For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

24For I say to you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see and did not see, and to hear what you hear and did not hear.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

25And behold, a certain lawyer rose up, testing Him, saying, “Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?”

26“What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you read it?”

26And He said to him, “What has been written in the Law? How do you read it?”

27He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

27And answering, he said, “‘You will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”

28“You have answered correctly,” Jesus said. “Do this and you will live.”

28And He said to him, “You answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”

29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

29But wanting to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30Jesus took up this question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.

30And Jesus, having taken it up, said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers who, having both stripped him and having inflicted wounds, went away, having left him half dead.

31Now by chance a priest was going down the same road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

31Now by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and having seen him, he passed by on the opposite side.

32So too, when a Levite came to that spot and saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32And likewise also a Levite, having come to the place and having seen, passed by on the opposite side.

33But a Samaritan on a journey came upon him, and when he saw him, he had compassion.

33But a certain Samaritan, journeying, came to him, and having seen, he was moved with compassion;

34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

34and having come, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and having put him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him.

35The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he said, ‘and on my return I will repay you for any additional expense.’

35And on the next day, having taken out two denarii, he gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you might expend, I, in my returning, will repay you.’

36Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

36Which of these three seems to you to have been a neighbor of the one having fallen among the robbers?”

37“The one who showed him mercy,” replied the expert in the law.

Then Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

37And he said, “The one having done the mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.”

Martha and Mary

38As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.

38Now in their going, He entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house.

39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message.

39And she had a sister called Mary, who also, having sat down at the feet of the Lord, was hearing His word.

40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”

40But Martha was distracted about much service; and having stood, she said, “Lord, is it not concerning to You that my sister left me alone to serve? Therefore speak to her so that she might help me!”

41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things.

41And answering, the Lord said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things;

42But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”

42but little is necessary, or one thing; for Mary chose the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
