Mark 5

The Demons and the Pigs

1On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.

1And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.

2As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs.

2And on His having gone out of the boat, immediately out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit met Him,

3This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains.

3who had his dwelling in the tombs. And no longer was anyone able to bind him, not even with a chain,

4Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him.

4because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn in two by him, and the shackles had been shattered. And no one had strength to subdue him.

5Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.

5And constantly all night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.

6When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.

6And having seen Jesus from afar, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.

7And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!”

7And having cried out in a loud voice, he says, “What is it to me and to You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure You by God, do not torment me!”

8For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!”

8For He was saying to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”

9“What is your name?” Jesus asked.

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”

9And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he says to Him, “Legion is my name, because we are many.”

10And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.

10And he implored Him much that He might not send them out of the region.

11There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.

11Now there was near the mountain a great herd of pigs feeding.

12So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”

12And they implored Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter into them.”

13He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.

13And He allowed them. And the unclean spirits, having gone out, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea—about two thousand—and they were drowned in the sea.

14Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.

14And those feeding them fled and reported it to the city and to the fields. And they went to see what it is that has happened.

15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

15And they come to Jesus, and they see the man possessed by demons sitting, clothed and sound-minded—the one having had the legion—and they were afraid.

16Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs.

16And those having seen it related to them how it happened to the one possessed by demons, and about the pigs.

17And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.

17And they began to implore Him to go away from their borders.

18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.

18And on His having entered into the boat, the one having been possessed by demons was imploring Him that he might be with Him.

19But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”

19And He did not permit him, but He says to him, “Go to your house, to your own, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”

20So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.

20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus did for him. And all were marveling.

The Healing Touch of Jesus

21When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.

21And on Jesus having crossed over in the boat again to the other side, a great crowd was gathered to Him, and He was beside the sea.

22A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet

22And one of the synagogue rulers comes, named Jairus, and having seen Him, he falls at His feet,

23and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”

23and he implores Him much, saying, “My little daughter is holding at the end, so that, having come, You might lay the hands on her, so that she might be saved, and she might live.”

24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.

24And He went away with him. And a great crowd was following Him, and they were pressing in on Him.

25And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.

25And a woman, being with a flow of blood twelve years,

26She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.

26and having suffered much under many physicians, and having spent all of hers and having benefited in no way, but rather to the worse having come,

27When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.

27having heard about Jesus, having come in the crowd behind, she touched His garment.

28For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”

28For she was saying, “If I shall touch even His garments, I will be saved.”

29Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

29And immediately her flow of blood was dried up, and she knew in the body that she was healed from the affliction.

30At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”

30And immediately Jesus, having known in Himself the power having gone out of Him, having turned in the crowd, said, “Who touched My garments?”

31His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’”

31And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”

32But He kept looking around to see who had done this.

32And He was looking around to see the one having done this.

33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.

33And the woman, having been afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth.

34“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”

34And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace and be sound from your affliction.”

35While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”

35In His still speaking, they come from the synagogue ruler, saying, “Your daughter died; why do you still trouble the Teacher?”

36But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”

36But Jesus, having heard the word spoken, says to the synagogue ruler, “Do not fear; only believe.”

37And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

37And He did not allow anyone to follow with Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.

38When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.

38And they come to the house of the synagogue ruler, and He sees a commotion, and much weeping and wailing.

39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”

39And having entered, He says to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child did not die, but sleeps.”

40And they laughed at Him.

After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.

40And they were laughing at Him. And He, having put all outside, takes along the father and the mother of the child, and those with Him, and He enters in where the child was.

41Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”

41And having taken the hand of the child, He says to her, “Talitha, koum!” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!”

42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). And at once they were utterly astounded.

42And immediately the girl arose and began walking, for she was of twelve years. And immediately they were amazed with great amazement.

43Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.

43And He instructed them much that no one should know this; and He said to be given to her to eat.
