Mark 8

The Feeding of the Four Thousand

1In those days the crowd once again became very large, and they had nothing to eat. Jesus called the disciples to Him and said,

1In those days, the crowd again being great and not having what they might eat, having summoned the disciples, He says to them,

2“I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat.

2“I have compassion toward the crowd, because already three days they continue with Me and have nothing that they might eat.

3If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way. For some of them have come a great distance.”

3And if I shall dismiss them hungry to their house, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from afar.”

4His disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could anyone find enough bread to feed all these people?”

4And His disciples answered Him, “From where will anyone be able to satisfy these with loaves here in a wilderness?”

5“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied.

5And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”

6And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven loaves, gave thanks and broke them, and gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And they distributed them to the crowd.

6And He commands the crowd to recline on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, having given thanks, He broke them and was giving them to His disciples to set before them. And they set them before the crowd.

7They also had a few small fish, and Jesus blessed them and ordered that these be set before them as well.

7And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, He said to set before them these also.

8The people ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

8And they ate and were satisfied, and they took up an abundance of fragments—seven baskets.

9And about four thousand men were present.

And when Jesus had dismissed the crowd,

9And there were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.

10He immediately got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

10And immediately, having entered into the boat with His disciples, He went to the parts of Dalmanutha.

The Demand for a Sign

11Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, testing Him by demanding from Him a sign from heaven.

11And the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him.

12Jesus sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

12And having sighed deeply in His spirit, He says, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

13And He left them, got back into the boat, and crossed to the other side.

13And having left them, having embarked again, He went away to the other side.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod

14Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.

14And they forgot to take loaves, and except one loaf they had nothing with them in the boat.

15“Watch out!” He cautioned them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod.”

15And He was instructing them, saying, “Watch! Take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

16So they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.

16And they were reasoning with one another because they had no loaves.

17Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them, “Why are you debating about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Do you have such hard hearts?

17And having known, He says to them, “Why do you reason that you have no loaves? Do you not yet perceive, nor do you understand? Do you have your heart hardened?

18‘Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?’ And do you not remember?

18‘Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?’ And do you not remember?

19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?”

“Twelve,” they answered.

19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They say to Him, “Twelve.”

20“And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?”

“Seven,” they said.

20“When also the seven were for the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.”

21Then He asked them, “Do you still not understand?”

21And He was saying to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

The Blind Man at Bethsaida

22When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.

22And they come to Bethsaida. And they bring to Him a blind man and implore Him that He might touch him.

23So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then He spit on the man’s eyes and placed His hands on him. “Can you see anything?” He asked.

23And having taken hold of the hand of the blind man, He led him forth outside of the village. And having spit upon his eyes, having laid the hands upon him, He was asking him, “Do you see anything?”

24The man looked up and said, “I can see the people, but they look like trees walking around.”

24And having looked up, he was saying, “I see the men, because I see them as trees walking.”

25Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly.

25Then He laid the hands upon his eyes again, and he opened his eyes, and he was restored, and he was seeing everything clearly.

26Jesus sent him home and said, “Do not go back into the village.”

26And He sent him to his house, saying, “Do not enter into the village.”

Peter’s Confession of Christ

27Then Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way, He questioned His disciples: “Who do people say I am?”

27And Jesus and His disciples went out into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way, He was questioning His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say I am?”

28They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”

28And they spoke to Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

29“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”

29And He was questioning them, “But you, who do you say I am?” Answering, Peter says to Him, “You are the Christ.”

30And Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about Him.

30And He warned them that they should tell no one concerning Him.

Christ’s Passion Foretold

31Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and after three days rise again.

31And He began to teach them that it is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and after three days to rise again.

32He spoke this message quite frankly, and Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

32And He was speaking openly the word. And Peter, having taken Him aside, began to rebuke Him.

33But Jesus, turning and looking at His disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

33But having turned and having seen His disciples, He rebuked Peter, and He says, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

Take Up Your Cross

34Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples, and He told them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.

34And having summoned the crowd with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.

35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the gospel will save it.

35For whoever may want to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life on account of Me and of the gospel, he will save it.

36What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?

36For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and to lose his soul?

37Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

37For what shall a man give as an exchange for his soul?

38If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

38For whoever may be ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him when He shall come in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
