Psalm 38

Do Not Rebuke Me in Your Anger

1A Psalm of David, for remembrance.

O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger

or discipline me in Your wrath.

1A Psalm of David, for remembrance. O YHWH, do not rebuke me in Your wrath and chastise me in Your fury.

2For Your arrows have pierced me deeply,

and Your hand has pressed down on me.

2For Your arrows descend into me, and Your hand comes down on me.

3There is no soundness in my body

because of Your anger;

there is no rest in my bones

because of my sin.

3No soundness is in my flesh before the face of Your anger; no peace is in my bones before the face of my sin.

4For my iniquities have overwhelmed me;

they are a burden too heavy to bear.

4For my iniquities have passed over my head; like a heavy burden, they are heavy for me.

5My wounds are foul and festering

because of my sinful folly.

5My wounds are foul and festering, before the face of my foolishness.

6I am bent and brought low;

all day long I go about mourning.

6I am bent, I am bowed down even to excess; all the day I go about mourning.

7For my loins are full of burning pain,

and no soundness remains in my body.

7For my loins are full of burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.

8I am numb and badly crushed;

I groan in anguish of heart.

8I am numb and crushed, even to excess; I roar from the groaning of my heart.

9O Lord, my every desire is before You;

my groaning is not hidden from You.

9O Lord, all my desire is before You, and my groaning is not hidden from You.

10My heart pounds, my strength fails,

and even the light of my eyes has faded.

10My heart pounds, my strength has forsaken me, and the light of my eyes—even they are not with me.

11My beloved and friends shun my disease,

and my kinsmen stand at a distance.

11My beloved and my friends stand away from my plague; my neighbors stand far off.

12Those who seek my life lay snares;

those who wish me harm speak destruction,

plotting deceit all day long.

12And those seeking my soul lay snares, and those searching out my harm speak; they ponder destruction and treachery all the day.

13But like a deaf man, I do not hear;

and like a mute man, I do not open my mouth.

13And I am like a deaf one who does not hear and like a mute one who does not open his mouth.

14I am like a man who cannot hear,

whose mouth offers no reply.

14And I am like a man who is not hearing, and in his mouth are no rebukes,

15I wait for You, O LORD;

You will answer, O Lord my God.

15because for You, O YHWH, I have waited; You will answer, O Lord my God.

16For I said, “Let them not gloat over me—

those who taunt me when my foot slips.”

16For I said, “Lest they rejoice over me; in the slipping of my foot they magnify themselves against me.”

17For I am ready to fall,

and my pain is ever with me.

17For I am ready to fall, and my sorrow is before me continually.

18Yes, I confess my iniquity;

I am troubled by my sin.

18For I declare my iniquity; I am anxious over my sin.

19Many are my enemies without cause,

and many hate me without reason.

19And my enemies without cause are many, and those hating me without cause have been multiplied.

20Those who repay my good with evil

attack me for pursuing the good.

20And those repaying evil for good, they oppose me, because of my pursuing good.

21Do not forsake me, O LORD;

be not far from me, O my God.

21Do not forsake me, O YHWH; O my God, do not be far from me!

22Come quickly to help me,

O Lord my Savior.

22Hurry to help me, O Lord, my salvation.
