2 Samuel 22

David’s Song of Deliverance

1And David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.

1And David spoke to YHWH the words of this song on the day when YHWH had snatched him up from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.

2He said:

“The LORD is my rock,

my fortress, and my deliverer.

2And he said: “YHWH is my rock and stronghold and rescuer to me.

3My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

my shield, and the horn of my salvation.

My stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior,

You save me from violence.

3God is my rock, I will take refuge in Him, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my Savior; from violence You save me.

4I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised;

so shall I be saved from my enemies.

4I will call upon YHWH who is to be praised, and from my enemies I shall be saved.

5For the waves of death engulfed me;

the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me.

5For the waves of death surrounded me, the floods of ungodliness terrified me,

6The cords of Sheol entangled me;

the snares of death confronted me.

6the sorrows of Sheol surrounded me, the snares of death confronted me.

7In my distress I called upon the LORD;

I cried out to my God.

And from His temple He heard my voice,

and my cry for help reached His ears.

7In my distress I called upon YHWH, and to my God I cried out, and He heard my voice from His temple, and my cry is in His ears.

8Then the earth shook and quaked;

the foundations of the heavens trembled;

they were shaken because He burned with anger.

8And the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of the heavens quaked. And they were shaken, because He was hot.

9Smoke rose from His nostrils,

and consuming fire came from His mouth;

glowing coals blazed forth.

9Smoke went up from His nostrils, and consuming fire from His mouth; glowing coals were kindled by it.

10He parted the heavens and came down

with dark clouds beneath His feet.

10And He stretched out the heavens and came down, and darkness was under His feet.

11He mounted a cherub and flew;

He soared on the wings of the wind.

11And He rode upon a cherub and flew, and He soared on the wings of the wind.

12He made darkness a canopy around Him,

a gathering of water and thick clouds.

12And He made darkness around Him as a covering, darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

13From the brightness of His presence

coals of fire blazed forth.

13From the brightness before Him coals of fire blazed forth.

14The LORD thundered from heaven;

the voice of the Most High resounded.

14YHWH thundered from the heavens, and the Most High gave forth His voice.

15He shot His arrows and scattered the foes;

He hurled lightning and routed them.

15And He sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and He vanquished them.

16The channels of the sea appeared,

and the foundations of the world were exposed

at the rebuke of the LORD,

at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.

16And the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were uncovered at the rebuke of YHWH, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.

17He reached down from on high and took hold of me;

He drew me out of deep waters.

17He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters.

18He rescued me from my powerful enemy,

from foes too mighty for me.

18He snatched me up from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me,

19They confronted me in my day of calamity,

but the LORD was my support.

19they confronted me in the day of my calamity, and YHWH was support to me.

20He brought me out into the open;

He rescued me because He delighted in me.

20And He brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.

21The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness;

He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.

21YHWH rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands He has repaid to me.

22For I have kept the ways of the LORD

and have not wickedly departed from my God.

22For I have kept the ways of YHWH, and have not done wickedly against my God.

23For all His ordinances are before me;

I have not disregarded His statutes.

23For all His ordinances are before me, and His statutes—I have not turned away from them.

24And I have been blameless before Him

and kept myself from iniquity.

24And I was blameless before Him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.

25So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness,

according to my cleanness in His sight.

25And YHWH has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness before His eyes.

26To the faithful You show Yourself faithful,

to the blameless You show Yourself blameless;

26With the kind You show Yourself kind, with a blameless man You show Yourself blameless,

27to the pure You show Yourself pure,

but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.

27with the pure You show Yourself pure, and with the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.

28You save an afflicted people,

but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.

28And the humble people You will save, and Your eyes are on the haughty, to bring them down.

29For You, O LORD, are my lamp;

the LORD lights up my darkness.

29For You are my lamp, O YHWH, and YHWH shall enlighten my darkness.

30For in You I can charge an army;

with my God I can scale a wall.

30For by You I can run against a troop; by my God I can leap over a wall.

31As for God, His way is perfect;

the word of the LORD is flawless.

He is a shield to all

who take refuge in Him.

31As for God, His way is perfect; the word of YHWH is refined; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

32For who is God besides the LORD?

And who is the Rock except our God?

32For who is God, except YHWH? And who is a rock, except our God?

33God is my strong fortress,

and He makes my way clear.

33God is is my stronghold of strength, and He makes perfect my way.

34He makes my feet like those of a deer

and stations me upon the heights.

34He makes my feet like those of a deer, and on my high places He sets me.

35He trains my hands for battle;

my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

35He teaches my hands for war, and my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

36You have given me Your shield of salvation,

and Your gentleness exalts me.

36And You have given me the shield of Your salvation, and Your gentleness has made me great.

37You broaden the path beneath me

so that my ankles do not give way.

37You enlarged my path under me, and my feet did not slip.

38I pursued my enemies and destroyed them;

I did not turn back until they were consumed.

38I have pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and neither did I turn back again until they were consumed.

39I devoured and crushed them so they could not rise;

they have fallen under my feet.

39And I have destroyed them and wounded them, so that they could not rise, and they have fallen under my feet.

40You have armed me with strength for battle;

You have subdued my foes beneath me.

40And You have girded me with strength for the battle; those who rose against me You have subdued under me.

41You have made my enemies retreat before me;

I destroyed those who hated me.

41And You have given me the necks of my enemies—of those who hated me—and I destroyed them.

42They looked, but there was no one to save them—

to the LORD, but He did not answer.

42They looked, and there was none to save, to YHWH, and He did not answer them.

43I ground them as the dust of the earth;

I crushed and trampled them like mud in the streets.

43And I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth, like dirt in the streets I crushed them and trampled them.

44You have delivered me from the strife of my people;

You have preserved me as the head of nations;

a people I had not known shall serve me.

44And You have rescued me from the strife of my people, You have kept me as the head of the nations; a people I have not known shall serve me.

45Foreigners cower before me;

when they hear me, they obey me.

45Sons of a stranger submit to me; at the hearing of an ear, they listen to me.

46Foreigners lose heart

and come trembling from their strongholds.

46Sons of a stranger fade away and come trembling from their strongholds.

47The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock!

And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted—

47YHWH lives, and blessed be my Rock, and may God the Rock of my salvation be exalted.

48the God who avenges me

and brings down nations beneath me,

48It is God who gives vengeance to me and subdues the peoples under me,

49who frees me from my enemies.

You exalt me above my foes;

You rescue me from violent men.

49and He delivers me from my enemies; and those who rise against me You lift me up above, from the man of violence You deliver me.

50Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations;

I will sing praises to Your name.

50Upon thus I will confess You, O YHWH, among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to Your name.

51Great salvation He brings to His king.

He shows loving devotion to His anointed,

to David and his descendants forever.”

51Great salvation is to His king, and He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and to his seed even to forever.”
