Ezekiel 34
A Prophecy against Israel’s Shepherds
2“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who only feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed their flock?
2“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to them—to the shepherds—thus says the Lord YHWH: ‘Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves. Should it not be that the shepherds shepherd the flock?
4You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bound up the injured, brought back the strays, or searched for the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty.
4Those being weak you have not strengthened, and those being sick you have not healed, and those being broken you have not bandaged, and those driven off you have not returned, and those being lost you have not sought, and you have ruled them with force and with harshness.
6My flock went astray on all the mountains and every high hill. They were scattered over the face of all the earth, with no one to search for them or seek them out.’
6My flock went astray through all the mountains, and on every high hill; and My flock was scattered over all the face of the earth, and there was not one searching or seeking them.’
8‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, because My flock lacks a shepherd and has become prey and food for every wild beast, and because My shepherds did not search for My flock but fed themselves instead,
8‘As I live—a declaration of the Lord YHWH—surely because My flock became as prey, and My flock became as food for every beast of the field, for lack of a shepherd, and My shepherds did not search for My flock, and the shepherds shepherded themselves, and My flock they did not feed.
10This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will demand from them My flock and remove them from tending the flock, so that they can no longer feed themselves. For I will deliver My flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.’
10Thus says the Lord YHWH, ‘Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require My flock from their hands, and I will make them cease from shepherding the sheep, and the shepherds no longer will shepherd themselves; for I will snatch My flock from their mouths, and they will not be for them as food.’
The Good Shepherd
12As a shepherd looks for his scattered sheep when he is among the flock, so I will look for My flock.
I will rescue them from all the places to which they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.
12As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day of his being in the midst of his sheep that are scattered, so will I seek out My flock, and I will deliver them from all the places to which they were scattered there on the day of cloud and darkness.
13I will bring them out from the peoples, gather them from the countries, and bring them into their own land. I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines, and in all the settlements of the land.
13And I will bring them out from the peoples, and I will gather them from the lands, and I will bring them to their own land, and I will let them graze on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys, and in all the inhabited places of the land.
14I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in a good grazing land; they will feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
14I will feed them in good pasture, and on the mountains of the height of Israel will be their grazing land; there they will lie down in good grazing land, and they will feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
16I will seek the lost, bring back the strays, bind up the broken, and strengthen the weak; but the sleek and strong I will destroy. I will shepherd them with justice.’
16The one being lost I will seek, and the one driven away I will return, and the broken I will bind up, and the one being sick I will strengthen, and the fat one and the strong one I will destroy; I will shepherd her with justice.’
18Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of the pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink the clear waters? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?
18Is it a little thing for you to feed on the good pasture, that the remainder of your pasture-land you would trample with your feet? And the clear waters you drink, that that the remainder you would muddy with your feet?
The Covenant of Peace
25I will make with them a covenant of peace and rid the land of wild animals, so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the forest.
25And I will cut with them a covenant of peace, and the evil beast I will make cease from the land, and they will dwell in the wilderness in safety, and they will sleep in the forests.
27The trees of the field will give their fruit, and the land will yield its produce; My flock will be secure in their land. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke and delivered them from the hands that enslaved them.
27And the trees of the field will give forth their fruit, and the earth will give forth her produce, and they will be upon their land in safety; and they will know that I am YHWH, when I have broken the bands of their yoke and delivered them from the hand of those enslaving them.
28They will no longer be prey for the nations, and the beasts of the earth will not consume them. They will dwell securely, and no one will frighten them.
28And they will be no longer as prey for the nations, and the beasts of the land will not devour them; and they will dwell in safety, and no one will frighten them.
29And I will raise up for them a garden of renown, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land or bear the scorn of the nations.
29And I will raise up for them a planting of renown, and will they be no longer consumed by hunger in the land, and they will bear no more the shame of the nations!
