John 11

The Death of Lazarus

1At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

2(Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was to anoint the Lord with perfume and wipe His feet with her hair.)

2And Mary was the one having anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and having wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick.”

3Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, the one whom You love is sick.”

4When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

4And having heard, Jesus said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6So on hearing that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two days,

6Therefore when He heard that he is sick, then indeed He remained in the place in which He was two days.

7and then He said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”

7Then after this, He says to the disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”

8“Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews just tried to stone You, and You are going back there?”

8The disciples say to Him, “Rabbi, just now the Jews were seeking to stone You, and again You are going there?”

9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world.

9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of the day? If anyone may walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light.”

10But if anyone may walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

11After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”

11He said these things, and after this He says to them, “Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I go so that I may awaken him.”

12His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.”

12Therefore the disciples said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved.”

13They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus.

13Now Jesus had spoken about his death; but they thought that He speaks about the rest of sleep.

14So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,

14So then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus has died,

15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

15and I rejoice for your sake (so that you might believe) that I was not there. But let us go to him.”

16Then Thomas called Didymus said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”

16Therefore Thomas called Didymus said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”

Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary

17When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb.

17Therefore, having come, Jesus found him already having been four days in the tomb.

18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away,

18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.

19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them in the loss of their brother.

19And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, so that they might console them concerning their brother.

20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home.

20Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus is coming, met Him; but Mary was sitting in the house.

21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

21Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

22But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask of Him.”

22But even now I know that whatever You might ask God, God will give You.”

23“Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.

23Jesus says to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

24Martha says to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.”

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he may die, he will live.

26And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

26And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?”

27“Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

27She says to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the One coming into the world.”

28After Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.”

28And having said these things, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, having said, “The Teacher is come, and He calls you.”

29And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.

29And she, as she heard, rose up quickly and was coming to Him.

30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.

30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.

31When the Jews who were in the house consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

31Then the Jews being with her in the house and consoling her, having seen that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, having thought that she is going to the tomb so that she might weep there.

32When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

32Therefore Mary, as she came to where Jesus was, having seen Him, fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

33Therefore Jesus, as He saw her weeping and the Jews having come with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit and Himself troubled.

34“Where have you put him?” He asked.

“Come and see, Lord,” they answered.

34And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They say to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

35Jesus wept.

35Jesus wept.

36Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”

36Therefore the Jews were saying, “Behold how He was loving him!”

37But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept Lazarus from dying?”

37But some of them said, “Was not this man, the One having opened the eyes of the blind able to have caused also that this one should not have died?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.

38So Jesus, being deeply moved in Himself again, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it.

39“Take away the stone,” Jesus said.

“Lord, by now he stinks,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man. “It has already been four days.”

39Jesus says, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the one having died, says to Him, “Lord, already he stinks, for it is four days.”

40Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

40Jesus says to her, “Did I not say to you that if you should believe, you will see the glory of God?”

41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

41So they took away the stone. Now Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me.

42I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.”

42And I knew that You always hear Me; but I said it because of the crowd standing around, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”

43After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

43And having said these things, He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

44The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face wrapped in a cloth.

“Unwrap him and let him go,” Jesus told them.

44The one having been dead came out, the feet and the hands bound with linen strips, and his face bound around in a soudario. Jesus says to them, “Unbind him and allow him to go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him.

45Therefore many of the Jews, having come to Mary and having seen what He did, believed in Him.

46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

46But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus did.

47Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs.

47Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together a council, and they were saying, “What do we do? For this man does many signs.

48If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

48If we shall let Him alone like this, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and will take away both our place and nation.”

49But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!

49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”

50nor do you reckon that it is profitable for you that one man should die for the people and the whole nation should not perish.”

51Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation,

51Now he did not say this from himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

52and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one.

52and not for the nation only, but also so that the children of God, those having been scattered, He might gather together into one.

53So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.

53So from that day they took counsel together that they might kill Him.

54As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim in an area near the wilderness. And He stayed there with the disciples.

54Therefore Jesus no longer was walking publicly among the Jews, but He went away from there into the region near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. And there He stayed with the disciples.

55Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover.

55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country before the Passover, so that they might purify themselves.

56They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? Will He come to the feast at all?”

56Therefore they were seeking Jesus and were speaking with one another standing in the temple: “What does it seem to you? That He may not come to the feast?”

57But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.

57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command that if anyone should know where He is, he should show it, so that they might seize Him.
