John 12

Mary Anoints Jesus

1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.

1Therefore Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised out from the dead.

2So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him.

2Therefore they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him.

3Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

3Therefore Mary, having taken a litra of fragrant oil of pure nard, of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

4But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked,

4But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, being about to betray Him, says,

5“Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?”

5“Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”

6Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it.

6But he said this not because he was caring for the poor, but because he was a thief; and having the money bag, he used to take up that being put into it.

7“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial.

7Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that for the day of My burial she may keep it.

8The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.”

8For you always have the poor with you, but not always do you have Me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was there. And they came not only because of Him, but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.

9Therefore the great crowd of the Jews knew that He is there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but so that they might see Lazarus also, whom He raised out from the dead.

10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,

10And the chief priests took counsel that they might kill Lazarus also,

11for on account of him many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.

11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

12On the next day the great crowd, having come to the feast, having heard that Jesus is coming into Jerusalem,

13They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting:

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the King of Israel!”

13took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and they were shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord!” “And the King of Israel!”

14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written:

14Now Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, just as it is written:

15“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion.

See, your King is coming,

seated on the colt of a donkey.”

15“Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King comes, sitting on the colt of a donkey.”

16At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him.

16His disciples did not know these things from the first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him and these things they did to Him.

17Meanwhile, many people who had been with Jesus when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.

17Therefore the crowd being with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him out from the dead were testifying.

18That is also why the crowd went out to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.

18Because of this the crowd also met Him, because they heard of His having done this sign.

19Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”

19Therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, “You see that you gain nothing. Behold, the world went away after Him!”

Jesus Predicts His Death

20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.

20Now there were certain Greeks among those coming up so that they might worship at the feast.

21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”

21Therefore these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and they were asking him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”

22Philip relayed this appeal to Andrew, and both of them went and told Jesus.

22Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus.

23But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

23And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man shall be glorified.

24Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, should die, it remains alone; but if it should die, it bears much fruit.

25Whoever loves his life will lose it, but whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

25The one loving his life loses it, and the one hating his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.

26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, My servant will be as well. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.

26If anyone may serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there also My servant will be. If anyone may serve Me, the Father will honor him.

27Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour.

27Now My soul has been troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But because of this I came to this hour.

28Father, glorify Your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

28Father, glorify Your name!” Therefore a voice came from heaven: “I have both glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him.

29Therefore the crowd, having stood and having heard, was saying, “There has been thunder.” Others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

30In response, Jesus said, “This voice was not for My benefit, but yours.

30Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come because of Me, but because of you.

31Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out.

31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.”

32And I, when I shall be lifted up from the earth, will draw all to Myself.”

33He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.

33Now He was saying this signifying by what death He was about to die.

34The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever. So how can You say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

34Then the crowd answered Him, “We heard from the Law that the Christ remains to the age, and how do You say that it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

35Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

35Therefore Jesus said to them, “Yet a little time the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness might not overtake you. And the one walking in the darkness does not know where he goes.

36While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.”

After Jesus had spoken these things, He went away and was hidden from them.

36While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and having gone away, He was hidden from them.

Belief and Unbelief

37Although Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still did not believe in Him.

37But of Him having done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him,

38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message?

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled that said: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?”

39For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says:

39Because of this, they were not able to believe, because again Isaiah said:

40“He has blinded their eyes

and hardened their hearts,

so that they cannot see with their eyes,

and understand with their hearts,

and turn,

and I would heal them.”

40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn, and I will heal them.”

41Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about Him.

41Isaiah said these things because he saw His glory and spoke about Him.

42Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue.

42Nevertheless, indeed many of the rulers also believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, so that they might not be put out of the synagogue;

43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

43for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

44Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me.

44And Jesus cried out and said, “The one believing in Me does not believe in Me but in the One having sent Me.

45And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me.

45And the one beholding Me beholds the One having sent Me.

46I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.

46I have come into the world as a light, so that everyone believing in Me should not remain in the darkness.

47As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

47And if anyone might hear My words and not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come so that I might judge the world, but so that I might save the world.

48There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

48The one rejecting Me and not receiving My words has one judging him: The word that I spoke, which will judge him in the last day.

49I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it.

49For I did not speak from Myself, but the Father Himself, having sent Me, has given Me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak.

50And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.”

50And I know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore what I speak, just as the Father has said to Me, so I speak.”
