John 18

The Betrayal of Jesus

1After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden.

1Having said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples beyond the Brook of Kidron, where there was a garden into which He and His disciples entered.

2Now Judas His betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.

2Now Judas, who is delivering Him up, also knew the place, because Jesus often gathered together there with His disciples.

3So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.

3Therefore Judas, having procured the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Whom are you seeking?”

4Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon Him, having gone out, also said to them, “Whom do you seek?”

5“Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.

Jesus said, “I am He.”

And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them.

5They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” He says to them, “I am He.” Now Judas, who is delivering Him up, also had been standing with them.

6When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

6Therefore when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew toward the back and fell to the ground.

7So He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.

7Again, therefore, He questioned them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

8“I told you that I am He,” Jesus replied. “So if you are looking for Me, let these men go.”

8Jesus answered, “I said to you that I am He. Therefore if you seek Me, allow these to go away,”

9This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”

9so that the word that He had spoken might be fulfilled: “Those whom You have given Me, I did not lose any of them, not one.”

10Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

10Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchus.

11“Put your sword back in its sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”

11Therefore Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath! The cup that the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”

12Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him.

12Then the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews took hold of Jesus and bound Him.

13They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.

13And they led Him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest the same year.

14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better if one man died for the people.

14Now Caiaphas was the one having given counsel to the Jews that it is profitable for one man to perish for the people.

Peter’s First Denial

15Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

15And Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Now since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest.

16But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.

16But Peter stood at the door outside. Therefore the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought in Peter.

17At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?”

“I am not,” he answered.

17Therefore the servant girl, the doorkeeper, says to Peter, “Are you not also of the disciples of this man?” He says, “I am not.”

18Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.

18Now the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing with them and warming himself.

Jesus before the High Priest

19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.

19Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and concerning His teaching.

20“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.

20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret.

21Why are you asking Me? Ask those who heard My message. Surely they know what I said.”

21Why do you question Me? Question those having heard what I spoke to them. Behold, they know what I said.”

22When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”

22Now on His having said these things, one of the officers standing by gave a slap to Jesus, having said, “Do You answer the high priest thus?”

23Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”

23Jesus answered him, “If I spoke evil, testify concerning the evil; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”

24Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.

24Then Annas sent Him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials

25Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?”

He denied it and said, “I am not.”

25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Therefore they said to him, “Are you not also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”

26One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”

26One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter had cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”

27Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.

27Again, then, Peter denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed.

Jesus before Pilate

28Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.

28Then they are leading Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the Praetorium, so that they should not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

29So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”

29Therefore Pilate went forth out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”

30“If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”

30They answered and said to him, “If He were not doing evil, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

31“You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them.

“We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied.

31Therefore Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not permitted to us to put anyone to death,”

32This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.

32so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He said signifying what death He was about to die.

33Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

33Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and he called Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

34“Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”

34Jesus answered, “Do you say this from yourself, or did others say it to you concerning Me?”

35“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”

35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests delivered You up to me. What did You do?”

36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm.”

36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, My attendants would fight so that I would not be delivered up to the Jews. But now My kingdom is not from here.”

37“Then You are a king!” Pilate said.

“You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”

37Therefore Pilate said to Him, “Then You are a king!” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, so that I may testify to the truth. Everyone being of the truth hears My voice.”

38“What is truth?” Pilate asked.

And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.

38Pilate says to Him, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and says to them, “I find no guilt in Him.

39But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

39But it is your custom that I should release to you one at the Passover; therefore do you wish that I should release to you the King of the Jews?”

40“Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” ( Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist. )

40Then they cried out again, saying, “Not this one, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
