Luke 13

A Call to Repentance

1At that time some of those present told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

1Now at the same time, some were present, reporting to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices.

2To this He replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this way?

2And answering, He said to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were sinners beyond all the Galileans, because they have suffered these things?

3No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

3No, I say to you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem?

4Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and it killed them: Do you think that these were debtors beyond all the men dwelling in Jerusalem?

5No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

5No, I say to you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

6Then Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.

6And He was speaking this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and he did not find any.

7So he said to the keeper of the vineyard, ‘Look, for the past three years I have come to search for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Therefore cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’

7And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Behold, for these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree and do not find it. Therefore cut it down! Why does it also render the soil useless?’

8‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone again this year, until I dig around it and fertilize it.

8And answering, he says to him, ‘Sir, leave it this year also, until I may dig around it and put in manure,

9If it bears fruit next year, fine. But if not, you can cut it down.’”

9and if indeed it should make fruit in the time, so be it. But if not, you will cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals a Disabled Woman

10One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,

10And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbaths.

11and a woman there had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was hunched over and could not stand up straight.

11And behold, a woman having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent over and not able to lift herself up to the full.

12When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your disability.”

12And having seen her, Jesus called her near and said to her, “Woman, you have been freed from your infirmity.”

13Then He placed His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began to glorify God.

13And He laid the hands on her, and immediately she was set upright and was glorifying God.

14But the synagogue leader was indignant that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. “There are six days for work,” he told the crowd. “So come and be healed on those days and not on the Sabbath.”

14And answering, the synagogue ruler, indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, was saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which it is necessary to work. Therefore, coming, be healed in these, and not on the day of the Sabbath.”

15“You hypocrites!” the Lord replied. “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it to water?

15But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you loose his ox or donkey from the stall on the Sabbath, and having led it away, give to it to drink?

16Then should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be released from her bondage on the Sabbath day?”

16And this one, being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound, behold, eighteen years, was it not necessary for her to be loosed from this bond on the day of the Sabbath?”

17When Jesus said this, all His adversaries were humiliated. And the whole crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things He was doing.

17And on His saying these things, all those opposed to Him were ashamed; and all the crowd was rejoicing at all the glorious things that were being done by Him.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

18Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it?

18And He was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what will I liken it?

19It is like a mustard seed that a man tossed into his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”

19It is like a grain of mustard that a man, having taken, cast into his garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky lodged in its branches.”

The Parable of the Leaven

20Again He asked, “To what can I compare the kingdom of God?

20And again, He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God?

21It is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.”

21It is like leaven that a woman, having taken it, hid in three measures of flour, until it all was leavened.”

The Narrow Door

22Then Jesus traveled throughout the towns and villages, teaching as He made His way toward Jerusalem.

22And He was going through by towns and villages, teaching and making progress toward Jerusalem.

23“Lord,” someone asked Him, “will only a few people be saved?”

Jesus answered,

23And someone said to Him, “Lord, are those being saved few?” And He said to them,

24“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.

24“Strive to enter through the narrow door, because many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

25After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’

But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’

25From that time the master of the house shall have risen up and shall have shut the door, then you shall begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ And answering, he will say to you, ‘I do not know from where you are.’

26Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

26Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate in your presence, and we drank, and you taught in our streets.’

27And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’

27And he will say, ‘I am saying to you, I do not know from where you are; depart from me, all you workers of unrighteousness.’

28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves are thrown out.

28There will be weeping and gnashing of the teeth when you shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you are being cast outside.

29People will come from east and west and north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.

29And they will come from east and west and from north and south and will recline in the kingdom of God.

30And indeed, some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”

30And behold, there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.”

Lament over Jerusalem

31At that very hour, some Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod wants to kill You.”

31In the same hour, some Pharisees came near, saying to Him, “Go out and proceed from here, because Herod wants to kill You.”

32But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I will keep driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach My goal.’

32And He said to them, “Having gone, say to this fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I complete cures today and tomorrow, and the third day, I am accomplished.’

33Nevertheless, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day, for it is not admissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.

33But it is necessary for Me to proceed today and tomorrow and the following day, because it is not permissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.

34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!

34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those sent to her, how often I willed to gather your children, the way that a hen does her brood under the wings, and you were not willing.

35Look, your house is left to you desolate. And I tell you that you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

35Behold, your house is left to you. And I say to you, you shall not see Me until it will come when you say, ‘Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord.’”
