Luke 5

The First Disciples

1On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God,

1Now it came to pass, in the crowd also pressing on Him to hear the word of God, that He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.

2He saw two boats at the edge of the lake. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.

2And He saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen, having gone away from them, were washing the nets.

3Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon and asked him to put out a little from shore. And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat.

3And having entered into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, He asked him to put out a little from the land. And having sat down, out of the boat He was teaching the crowds.

4When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”

4And when He ceased speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

5“Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night without catching anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.”

5And answering, Simon said, “Master, having toiled through the whole night, we took nothing. But upon Your word, I will let down the nets.”

6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to tear.

6And having done this, they enclosed a great multitude of fish, and their nets were tearing.

7So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

7And they beckoned to the partners in the other boat, having come, to help them, and they came and filled both boats so that they were sinking.

8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees. “Go away from me, Lord,” he said, “for I am a sinful man.”

8And having seen, Simon Peter fell at the knees of Jesus, saying, “Go out from me, Lord, because I am a sinful man.”

9For he and his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,

9For amazement laid hold on him and on all those with him at the catch of the fish that they took,

10and so were his partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee.

“Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon. “From now on you will catch men.”

10and likewise also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

11And when they had brought their boats ashore, they left everything and followed Him.

11And having brought down the boats upon the land, having left all, they followed Him.

The Leper’s Prayer

12While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell facedown and begged Him, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

12And it came to pass, in His being in one of the cities, that behold, a man full of leprosy, and having seen Jesus, having fallen upon his face, begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You are able to cleanse me.”

13Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

13And having stretched out the hand, He touched him, “saying, I am willing; be cleansed!” And immediately the leprosy went away from him.

14“Do not tell anyone,” Jesus instructed him. “But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”

14And He instructed him to tell no one: “But, having gone, show yourself to the priest, and offer concerning your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”

15But the news about Jesus spread all the more, and great crowds came to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses.

15But the word concerning Him was spreading still more, and many crowds were coming to hear and to be healed from their infirmities.

16Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray.

16And He Himself was withdrawing into the wilderness and praying.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

17One day Jesus was teaching, and the Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. People had come from Jerusalem and from every village of Galilee and Judea, and the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal the sick.

17And it came to pass, on one of the days, that He was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting, who were come out of every village of Galilee, and of Judea, and of Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was there for Him to heal.

18Just then some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They tried to bring him inside to set him before Jesus,

18And behold, men bringing upon a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and to place him before Him.

19but they could not find a way through the crowd. So they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

19And not having found what way they might bring him in through the crowd, having gone up on the housetop, they let him down with the little bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus.

20When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”

20And having seen their faith, He said, “Man, your sins have been forgiven you.”

21But the scribes and Pharisees began thinking to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?”

22Knowing what they were thinking, Jesus replied, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?

22And Jesus, having known their reasonings, answering, said to them, “Why do you reason in your hearts?

23Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?

23Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?

24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins…” He said to the paralytic, “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”

24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralyzed one, “I say to you, arise, and having taken up your mat, go to your house.”

25And immediately the man stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.

25And immediately, having risen up before them, having taken up that on which he was lying, he went away to his house, glorifying God.

26Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

26And amazement took all, and they were glorifying God. And they were filled with fear, saying, “We saw remarkable things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi

27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him,

27And after these things, He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. And He said to him, “Follow Me.”

28and Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him.

28And having left all, having arisen, he began to follow Him.

29Then Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them.

29And Levi made a great banquet for Him in his house, and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them.

30But the Pharisees and their scribes complained to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

30And the Pharisees and their scribes were grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”

31Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

31And answering, Jesus said to them, “Those being in good health have no need of a physician, but those being ill.

32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

32I have not come to call righteous ones, but sinners, to repentance.”

Questions about Fasting

33Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees frequently fast and pray, but Yours keep on eating and drinking.”

33And they said to Him, “The disciples of John fast often and make petitions; likewise also those of the Pharisees; but Yours eat and drink.”

34Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them?

34And Jesus said to them, “Are you able to make the sons of the bridechamber fast while the bridegroom is with them?

35But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.”

35But days will come also when the bridegroom shall have been taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

The Patches and the Wineskins

36He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will tear the new garment as well, and the patch from the new will not match the old.

36And He was speaking also a parable to them: “No one having torn a patch from a new garment puts it on an old garment. and if otherwise, he will tear the new also, and the old will not match the patch from the new.

37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined.

37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. and if otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins, and it will be poured out, and the wineskins will be destroyed.

38Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.

38But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.

39And no one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

39And no one having drunk old wine wants new; for he says, ‘The old is good.’”
