BOOK V
Psalms 107–150
1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
His loving devotion endures forever.
1Give thanks to YHWH, for He is good, for His loving devotion is forever!
2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy
2Let the redeemed of YHWH say, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
3and gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.a
3and from the lands He has gathered them—from the east and from the west, from the north and from the sea.
4Some wandered in desert wastelands,
finding no path to a city in which to dwell.
4They wandered in the wilderness, by the way in a desert; a city for of dwelling they did not find.
5They were hungry and thirsty;
their soul fainted within them.
5Hungry and thirsty, their soul in them grew faint.
6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and He delivered them from their distress.
6And they cried out to YHWH in the distress for them; from their straits He delivered them.
7He led them on a straight path
to reach a city where they could live.
7And He made them tread on a straight path, to walk toward a city of dwelling.
8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion
and His wonders to the sons of men.
8Let them give thanks to YHWH for His loving devotion, and His wonders to the sons of man!
9For He satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
9For He satisfies the rushing soul, and the hungry soul He fills with goodness.
10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
prisoners in affliction and chains,
10They are sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and irons,
11because they rebelled against the words of God
and despised the counsel of the Most High.
11because they rebelled against the words of God, and they despised the counsel of the Most High,
12He humbled their hearts with hard labor;
they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
12and He humbled with labor their heart; they fell down, and no one was helping.
13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and He saved them from their distress.
13And they cried out to YHWH in the distress for them, and from their straits He saved them.
14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
and broke away their chains.
14He brought them forth from darkness and the shadow of death, and their bonds He broke away.
15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion
15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion, and His wonders to the sons of man!
16For He has broken down the gates of bronze
and cut through the bars of iron.
16For He has broken down doors of bronze, and He has cut through bars of iron!
17Fools, in their rebellious ways,
and through their iniquities, suffered affliction.
17Fools from the path of their transgression, and by their iniquities they were afflicted.
18They loathed all food
and drew near to the gates of death.
18All food their soul abhorred, and they drew near to the gates of death.
19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
19And they cried out to YHWH in the distress for them, and from their straits He saved them.
20He sent forth His word and healed them;
He rescued them from the Pit.
20He sent His word and healed them, and He rescued them from the Pit.
21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion
21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion, and His wonders to the sons of man!
22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving
and declare His works with rejoicing.
22And let them sacrifice sacrifices of thanksgiving, and recount His works with rejoicing!
23Others went out to sea in ships,
conducting trade on the mighty waters.
23Those going down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters,
24They saw the works of the LORD,
and His wonders in the deep.
24they have seen the works of YHWH, and His wonders in the deep.
25For He spoke and raised a tempest
that lifted the waves of the sea.
25And He spoke and stationed the wind, a tempest, and it lifted high the waves;
26They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths;
their courage melted in their anguish.
26they went up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; their soul melted in evil.
27They reeled and staggered like drunkards,
and all their skill was useless.a
27They reel and stagger like the drunkard, and all their wisdom is swallowed up.
28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and He brought them out of their distress.
28And they cried out to YHWH in the distress for them, and from their straits He brought them out.
29He calmed the storm to a whisper,
and the waves of the seaa were hushed.
29He stilled the tempest to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30They rejoiced in the silence,
and He guided them to the harbor they desired.
30And they rejoiced because they grew quiet, and He guided them to the haven of their desire.
31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion
31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of man!
32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people
and praise Him in the council of the elders.
32And let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people, and in the seat of the elders praise Him!
33He turns rivers into deserts,
springs of water into thirsty ground,
33He turns rivers into a wilderness, and outpourings of waters into thirsty ground,
34and fruitful land into fields of salt,
because of the wickedness of its dwellers.
34a land of fruit into salty ground, from the wickedness of those dwelling in it.
35He turns a desert into pools of water
and a dry land into flowing springs.
35He turns the desert into pools of water, and a land of dryness into springs of waters.
36He causes the hungry to settle there,
that they may establish a city in which to dwell.
36And the hungry He makes to dwell there, that they may establish a city for a dwelling place.
37They sow fields and plant vineyards
that yield a fruitful harvest.
37And there they sow fields and plant vineyards, that they may yield the fruit of produce.
38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly;
He does not let their herds diminish.
38And He blesses them and they multiply exceedingly, and their cattle He does not let diminish.
39When they are decreased and humbled
by oppression, evil, and sorrow,
39When they are diminished and brought low from oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40He pours out contempt on the nobles
and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
40He pours out contempt on nobles, and causes them to wander in a wasteland without a path.
41But He lifts the needy from affliction
and increases their families like flocks.
41And He sets on high for the needy from affliction, and He places families as a flock.
42The upright see and rejoice,
and all iniquity shuts its mouth.
42Let the upright see and rejoice, and may all iniquity shut its mouth.
43Let him who is wise pay heed to these things
and consider the loving devotion of the LORD.
43And him who is wise, let him attend to these things, and they will consider the loving devotion of YHWH.
