Psalm 71

Be My Rock of Refuge

1In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge;

let me never be put to shame.

1In You, O YHWH, I take refuge; let me not be put to shame forever!

2In Your justice, rescue and deliver me;

incline Your ear and save me.

2In Your righteousness, deliver me and cause me to escape; incline to me Your ear, and save me!

3Be my rock of refuge,

where I can always go.

Give the command to save me,

for You are my rock and my fortress.

3May You be to me as a rock, a habitation, to go in continually; You have given a command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.

4Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,

from the grasp of the unjust and ruthless.

4O My God, rescue me from the hand of a wicked one, from the palm of the one acting unjustly and pressing.

5For You are my hope, O Lord GOD,

my confidence from my youth.

5For You are my hope, O Lord YHWH, my trust from my youth.

6I have leaned on You since birth;

You pulled me from my mother’s womb.

My praise is always for You.

6By You I have been supported from the womb; from the bowels of my mother You cut me out. My praise is continually for You.

7I have become a portent to many,

but You are my strong refuge.

7I have been as a wonder to many, and You are my strong refuge.

8My mouth is filled with Your praise

and with Your splendor all day long.

8My mouth is filled with Your praise, with Your splendor all the day.

9Do not discard me in my old age;

do not forsake me when my strength fails.

9Do not cast me off in the time of old age; according to the consumption of my strength do not forsake me.

10For my enemies speak against me,

and those who lie in wait for my life conspire,

10For my enemies speak against me, and those watching my soul take counsel together,

11saying, “God has forsaken him;

pursue him and seize him,

for there is no one to rescue him.”

11saying, “God has forsaken him. Pursue him and seize him, for there is none to deliver him!”

12Be not far from me, O God.

Hurry, O my God, to help me.

12O God, do not be far from me; O my God, hurry to be my help!

13May the accusers of my soul

be ashamed and consumed;

may those who seek my harm

be covered with scorn and disgrace.

13Let them be put to shame and consumed, those opposing my soul; let them be covered with scorn and disgrace, those seeking my harm!

14But I will always hope

and will praise You more and more.

14But I continually will hope, and I will add upon all Your praise.

15My mouth will declare Your righteousness

and Your salvation all day long,

though I cannot know their full measure.

15My mouth will recount Your righteousness, all the day Your salvation, though I do not know the numbers.

16I will come in the strength of the Lord GOD;

I will proclaim Your righteousness—Yours alone.

16I will come in the might of the Lord YHWH; I will cause Your righteousness to be remembered—Yours alone.

17O God, You have taught me from my youth,

and to this day I proclaim Your marvelous deeds.

17O God, You have taught me from my youth, and until now I declare Your wonders.

18Even when I am old and gray,

do not forsake me, O God,

until I proclaim Your power to the next generation,

Your might to all who are to come.

18Indeed, when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your arm to a generation, Your strength to everyone to come.

19Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God,

You who have done great things.

Who, O God, is like You?

19And Your righteousness, O God, is to the height! You who have done great things, O God—who is like You?

20Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes,

You will revive me once again.

Even from the depths of the earth

You will bring me back up.

20Though You have made me see many troubles and distresses, You will return and revive us; even from the depths of the earth, You will return and bring me up.

21You will increase my honor

and comfort me once again.

21You will increase my honor, and surrounding me, You will comfort me.

22So I will praise You with the harp

for Your faithfulness, O my God;

I will sing praise to You with the lyre,

O Holy One of Israel.

22I will also praise You with the harp for Your faithfulness, O my God; I will make music to You with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel!

23When I sing praise to You

my lips will shout for joy,

along with my soul,

which You have redeemed.

23My lips will shout for joy when when I sing praises to You, even my soul, which You have redeemed.

24My tongue will indeed proclaim

Your righteousness all day long,

for those who seek my harm

are disgraced and confounded.

24My tongue will also utter Your righteousness all the day, for they have been put to shame, for they are humiliated—those seeking my harm.
