Psalm 81

Sing for Joy to God Our Strength

1For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. Of Asaph.

Sing for joy to God our strength;

make a joyful noise to the God of Jacob.

1For the one directing. According to Gittith. Of Asaph. Ring out praise to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob!

2Lift up a song, strike the tambourine,

play the sweet-sounding harp and lyre.

2Lift up a melody and strike the timbrel, the sweet-sounding harp with the lute.

3Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon,

and at the full moon on the day of our Feast.

3Blow the shofar on the new moon, on the full moon at the day of our Feast.

4For this is a statute for Israel,

an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

4For it is a statute, O Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

5He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph

when he went out over the land of Egypt,

where I heard an unfamiliar language:

5As a testimony He established it in Joseph, in His going forth over the land of Egypt. I heard a language that I did not know:

6“I relieved his shoulder of the burden;

his hands were freed from the basket.

6“I turned aside his shoulder from the burden; his hands pass over from the basket.

7You called out in distress, and I rescued you;

I answered you from the cloud of thunder;

I tested you at the waters of Meribah.

Selah

7In the time of distress you called, and I drew you out; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah

8Hear, O My people, and I will warn you:

O Israel, if only you would listen to Me!

8hear, O My people, and I will testify against you—O Israel, if you would listen to Me!

9There must be no strange god among you,

nor shall you bow to a foreign god.

9There shall not be among you a strange god, and you shall not bow down to foreign god.

10I am the LORD your God,

who brought you up out of Egypt.

Open wide your mouth,

and I will fill it.

10I am YHWH your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt; open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.

11But My people would not listen to Me,

and Israel would not obey Me.

11My people would not listen to My voice, and Israel has not consented to Me.

12So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts

to follow their own devices.

12And I sent them away in the stubbornness of their hearts, to walk by their own counsels.

13If only My people would listen to Me,

if Israel would follow My ways,

13If only My people would listen to Me, Israel would walk in My ways!

14how soon I would subdue their enemies

and turn My hand against their foes!

14In a moment I would subdue their enemies, and over their adversaries I would turn back My hand.

15Those who hate the LORD would feign obedience,

and their doom would last forever.

15Those hating YHWH would feign obedience before Him, and their time would be forever.

16But I would feed you the finest wheat;

with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

16And He would feed him of the fat of wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
